Nils Master Auger Cover Modification (Video)

So I followed through on an idea that I've been toying with for my auger cover. There was some mention of it in the invention thread that is ongoing here.

I tried this concept last year with a solid disc magnet and some epoxy, but that got brittle in the cold and cracked and the magnet fell off. I never came back to the idea, however this year I was able to find these neodymium magnets with a through hole which made it much easier to securely mount.

It looks like this will be a nice mod to get rid of the bungie that I seem to fight with all the time.

These neodymium or "rare earth" magnets are very inexpensive but very strong. Actually they are scary strong and you need to be careful when working with them. A few things can happen. One, they can be attracted to each other so much that they will come together abruptly and shatter. Two, they can come together and pinch your skin while holding them, and they can also be attracted to just about everything around you. So be careful.

I forgot to add the technical specs:

Neodymium Ring or Disc Magnet

1/2"x1/8"x1/8"

I picked up 20 for $13.00 and change on the big online auction site.

Dozens of different sizes and shapes to work with. Only limited to your imagination.

If I was going to find those magnets in a store, where would I go? also, do you think you could rivet those to the cover instead of a screw and nut? I will have to investigate taht a little further I guess too......Good Job DTRO.....your auger looks a little cold too

Pretty sure you could do a rivet. In fact I bet there are several things a guy could improve upon from my design. It took me a grand total of about 5 minutes laugh

The magnets are brittle though. I busted 1 of them when I tightened the nut too tight.

I guess we'll find out.

There is a company marketing this idea for auger covers, so I would imagine they did some testing to make sure they would hold up. I guess i have enough magnets for about 3 rounds, so time will tell.
