How To Insulate Wheelhouse Floor?

Recommended Posts

Just got a smaller wheel house shell (6.5'x9') and I need to finish the inside and get on the ice. What's the best way to insulate the floor without shelling out a lot of coin?

I'd love to have it spray foamed but $250+ really isn't in my budget. I know they make kits for the DIY'er but don't know much about them. I was thinking going the plywood foam sheet sandwich to save money. Does a guy glue the foam to both sheets or just screw the top plywood layer into the first and call it good. What would be the best way to cut the holes with the fewest headaches during this insulating process?

Thanks for the help!

Personally I wouldnt bother insulating the floor and that would be the cheapest. lol Mine is not insulated and I think the holes stay open better than in a house with the floor insulated. And I can still walk around with my shoes off once the house is heated up. Just my opinion.

We did a floor on a 6.5 by 14' wheelhouse, after it was all assembled. If I remember right we needed three sheets of the foil covered sheets (one side covered). Measure, cut, glue in the middle, use screws with plastic washeres on the corners. Make sure you don't use screws long enough to poke through the plywood above. Also put the foil side down, towards the ice. Two guys, took us about an hour to do.

Im assuming from your post that the floor is not installed yet?? IF thats the case you hit the nail rite on the head with what your planning on doing. Your best bet would be to square out your holes from the top, then drill a large pilot hole with a drill, and then jus follow your chalked outline of your hole with a jig-saw. Remember to keep in mind where your steel frame is underneath though also, tends to weakn the frame when you cut it where you think ur holes should be! haha Your on the rite path! Post some pics if you get a chance, we would all love to see it!

Floor is already installed, walls are framed, & roof is on. Just need to cut the holes, wire, & insulate for now.

Muc- I like the sound of that price. Could you toss some more info my way on the location & name? Thanks!

sandwich 1" insulation between sheets of treated plywood and carpet. Make the top plywood and insulation the size of interior so if you need to replace it's easy. Use top plywood to make lids by cutting 1" smaller than bottom plywood.

Well I got a hold of two local spray foam companies and both wanted over $200 for just the floor so I went to the store and picked up some plywood and foam and will finish sandwiching the floor tonight. With only 3" of headroom to spare & the fact I don't like being too far off the ice, it'll be a layer of 1/2" foiled foam insulation between 2 layers of 1/2" plywood. I've used a house in the past that just had two 1/2" layers of plywood glued together with carpet on top and it always was plenty warm so I think this will be sufficient for the money spent. The walls and ceiling will be 1 1/2".

You guys dont need the plywood. Just get some 1.5 inch polystyreen(sp). Cut it with a long utility knife and cut it so that it fits really tight. Get some spray foam in the can. Make sure you can get the piece in. Then put the spray foam on the piece and shove it up in your frame. You should be able to do an 8*16 house for under $100 and it should take you about an hour with two guys.

You dont need to cover the foam with anything. It will last a lot longer than your plywood.
