Strikemaster Fuel Ratio

Craigums

Question

I have a Strikemaster Lazer Mag Ultra with a 2hp Tecumseh engine. What is the proper fuel/oil ratio. A sticker on the engine says 24:1, a bottle of 2-stroke oil I bought from Strikemaster says 40:1, and Ive heard some people saying they use 80:1. Also what is the best type of oil to use that I could find locally?

24:1 was the original recommended with that auger. When I was in Big Lake at the Strikemaster plant picking up the suits I was curious cause all the SM bottles of oil are now 40:1 and I had heard 40:1 but thought it might simply be for the Solo motors. The customer service guy said that 40:1 is now the recommended for the Tecumseh engine and running 40:1 will still garuantee all warranty/service issues with the Tecumseh engine as has been agreed upon between SM and Tecumseh.

I already mixed a gallon of 24:1 prior and am still running it as I simply don't want to try and add gas to the already mixed tank and try and get it right. Next gallon will be 40:1 mix though and see how it runs, currently runs perfectly fine for me at 24:1.

I think the old oil was petrlium and the new is synthetic. I went to Sabre like I read on here and it did make my SM auger start easier. I'm at about 80-1, just couldn't do the 100-1.

I swtiched my Lazer Mag over 2 years ago to Amzoil and use the pre measured packs. Starts great and no smoke. It sat all summer and popped on the 4th pull this fall. I also use Amzoil fuel stabilizer in it throughout the season and when its put away...No problems.

I was just at Strikemaster yesterday and asked them about this. The service tech said to use 40:1 in the old and new. I know of people who use amsoil with higher ratios, but when you spend that much money on a new auger it seems like it would be a good idea to use what is recommended. Also, it seems like everyone out there has a old, chrome handlebar, Strikemaster auger. I have to believe that for all those years, before synthetic was all the rage, they were using regular two stroke oil with a lower ratio. Look how those have held up.

I tried to use the strikemaster oil the first year I had my auger. The only two problems I had was I could not get my auger to start when it was below zero out and I destroyed my winter jacket with the black oil that flies out of the exhaust. When I switched to amsoil 100 to 1 three years ago all that went away. I go to lake of the woods and my auger starts even when it is 27 below and I dont wear two stroke oil anymore plus it dont smoke up a permanent fish house like the strike master stuff does.

I'll second the amsoil cure for smoking yourself out of the shelter. I broke my strikemaster in with a tank of conventional oil then went to amsoil, that was in 1995. I just cut holes last week with saber 100:1 in the tank, no problems and no smoke for 14 years now.

My Mag III+ died 5 years ago from carbon buildup from 2 cycle dino oil.

Scored the cylinder wall and piston, too bad too that was a good auger.

My mag 2000 will never run dino oil again, 90:1 Saber Pro is all I run now starts and runs better then when it was first broken in.

No black goo coming out of the exaust, don't have a perm. house but when I do it won't be smokie from the 2 cycle oil anymore.

I have used Opti 2 for 15 years with similar results to what you report about Amsoil. No smoke, smoother running engine, far easier starting. Flashed my Nils up at -34C here in the Lakeland of northern Alberta on the 3rd pull. I would not go back to conventional 2 cycle oil under any circumstances. The pillow paks that mix 2.5 gal. are ideal, as you always have fresh fuel for your auger & power saw in winter, and your weedeater in summer.

Switched my 7 year old Lazer Mag from Strikemaster oil to Amsoil Sabre 100:1 before last year's ice season and performance and starting has been great. As mentioned before, no more spitting oil on your jacket and less smoke are worth the switch alone.

Got mine on the web through Oilman's link provided on this site.

what is the difference from sabre and interceptor amsoil, i have been using amsoil interceptor for the last few tanks, seem to work ok, less smoke and easier to start, and also seem to have a touch more power

Several years ago the EPA (yes the government got involved) forced changes in 2-cycle oils due to emissions. AMSOIL now has 5 different 2-cycle oils designed to provide best performance in their preferred applications.

AMSOIL Saber Professional is designed to give best performance in 2-cycle premix air-cooled engines, i.e. augers, chain saws, trimmers, and a host of other tools. Designed to be used at ratios as lean as 100-1, though many prefer to use it richer at 80-1.

AMSOIL Interceptor is designed to give best performance in "power-valve" equipped 2-cycle engines - most commonly found in snow mobiles. Interceptor can be used in air-cooled pre-mix augers, though do NOT use at the very lean ratios - use Interceptor at 50-1 in an auger.

I don't know what the difference is and I can find Interceptor easier but I just stick with the Sabre Pro as recommended and mix it at 80:1 for all my 2 cycle stuff. I also use the Amsoil Outboard version for my Evinrude and everything runs great and starts much easier.

I've been using the synthetic brand at Fleet Farm for 4 years in weed whip, chain saw and auger. It replaces all mix ratios. It is by the chain saws and the other 2-cycle oils in the automotive department. It's called Timber something.

Thanks for asking, doing better slowly, 1 day at a time. I can sometimes go 6 to 7 hours between tylenol and been off the powerful drug pain killers for nearly 2 weeks now.

(For those who don't know, see my oilman thread over in the Benefits and Memorials forum.)

It is really great how much FM/Hot Spots Outdoors is a family!!!!!!!

My weatherman here in Tallahassee, FL said it was colder here at +14 deg this morning than it was in Minneapolis. Weird weather!!!
