Jiffy 3hp Stealth Auger Issue

NAG

Recommended Posts

I have a 3hp Jiffy Stealth auger with a Tecumseh motor. It is about 4 years old. I am having issues with it stalling out at high speed. It idles fine and will run at high speed for about 5-10 seconds and then it wants to stall out. Once it stalls it starts right back up and idles fine. I ran it in the summer and it ran fine until a few days ago. I pulled the carb adjustment screws and sprayed them with carb cleaner. Reinstalled the screws to factory settings. It is still doing the same thing. Any ideas?

Mine is over 20 years old, JIFFY 30 10". Good gas and some adjusting is all it has ever needed. Looking for a 8" auger to change sizes when perching. Seen a lot of other brands go to the heap and the JIFFY always can be fixed up for little to just a good cleaning. Brother also has same JIFFY that is older.

Have you checked to see if you have opened the tank vent on the fuel cap? If you have, open the high speed adjustment about one quarter turn counter clockwise. This will allow more fuel in to the fuel well in the carb body.

Also check the fuel tank on the inside where the fuel outlet is located. I have seen any number of items in the fuel tank that will gravitate to the fuel outlet, and cover the hole for the fuel. As soon as the engine dies, the obstruction will come free, and allow the engine to run for another short period of time.

I opened the high side about another quarter of a turn and it seems to run a little better. Went out on the ice and drilled a few holes and can still tell it is not running at full power. Right now the carb is set at 1 1/8 turns out on the Low side and about 1 turn out on the High side. I think I might jus thave to mess with it some more in this cold weather.

I hope this might help you get it running right.

ADJUSTING TECUMSEH 3 HP CARBURETOR

pop the red caps off.

Close both jets GENTLY

Open the Low speed 1/4 turn

Open High speed jet 1 1/4 turn

Start engine.

Adjust low speed until idling smoothly.

Open her up wide open.

Adjust High speed until engine transitions smoothly from idle to high speed without bogging.

Shut engine off. Let it cool.

Once engine is cold. Fire it up and let it idle for 30 secs. Open it up wide open again. Adjust if necassary.

The trick with the Jiffy's is to tune them during cold (ice fishing) weather.

Low speed screw, the one on the left.

High speed on the right.

I finally think I have it dialed in correctly. I am heading to the lake tonight to try it out. I switch to Amsoil Saber and mixed it 80:1. To get it running right I have the Low screw set to 1 turn out and the High screw turned to 1 1/4 turns out. Seems to run great with no load on it.

Went out last night and drilled about 15 holes to teest it out. I ran perfect at high speed, but after each hole it wanted to kill. I think my low side might be off a little bit as it always started back up. I did notice when it does idle it sometimes idles up and down on it own and if you tilt it a little it kills. Is that normal or should it stay running when you carry it with a little tilt?

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
