LEECH21
With the new Mn laws on portables, is it still necessary to display your Mn drivers license number or Mn DNR number on the house?
crawler harness
yes,you still have to have your license nummber or MNDNR # on your house. Many people were cited for not doing this last winter. People took it as since you didn't have to buy a shelter tag as they didn't need to display there name or license number.
1900_LE
What about non-residents? What will I need on my portable?
LEECH21
That's what I was thinking...but just wanted to make sure. Thanks!
CJH
That's a good question. I would assume you would have to show your out of state fishing license number, just like residents have to show their license number.
chris63
All houses placed on the ice will need either the name and address, drivers license number,or the dnr number. The letters must be at least two inches in height.Non residents too!c63
Ed Carlson
Gander in Fargo will offer a service to do Laminated Portable Shelter License signs up for ice shacks very soon. Pretty cheap too, single side one state $5, double sided format for two states with two sets of license info, just $8. Give the required info, and look around a bit, and pick it up at Costumer Service when your done, should take about 10 minutes to do or less. Laminated thus waterproof, so they will last. BrdHunter01
Are we talking portable ice shacks here? I'm a little confused... I've been checked several times in the last 2 years and have never been asked about any numbers on my portable?... Prob. been checked about 10 times in the last 2 ice seasons... T&KK
I have one of those shacks that fold out and pop up (similar to a double bull hunting blind) and didn' think i needed any posting on it........ guess i better check that one out before i go out this winter. luv2fish
Straight out of the regulation booklet, bottom of page 61. Pretty clear...The following regulations apply to all shelters used on all Minnesotawaters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere in this booklet.• All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the(1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) thenine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainlyand legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inchesin height.• A shelter may not be left unattended between midnight and one hour priorto sunrise unless the shelter is licensed.Note: The Dept. of Public Safety - DVS now requires trailers used to haulfish houses or dark houses and enclosed trailers or recreational trailersused for fishing to be registered. See your local Deputy Registrar fortrailer registration.
T&KK
A shelter may not be left unattended between midnight and one hour priorto sunrise unless the shelter is licensed. This bit get me..... If a shelter is required to be licensed or marked, why is there a stipulation on leaving an unmarked shelter? What that says to me is that you can leave an un marked shelter unattended in the day light....I'm not trying to be difficult and i know the easy answer is to just mark my little pop up, but my little pop up is pretty innefficient to mark since it folds up like a tent
GrizzlyAdams
All houses must have the identification on it, but if it is left unattended overnight then it must also be licensed. Do not need to purchase a license if it will not be left unattended on the lake over night.

I don't recall seeing 1 protable with this ID on them last year. Been checks several times the last 2 years no DNR officer has ever said anything to me.... U'd think they would at least let me know, maybe a warning or something? None of them have said a thing...

shnelson
Isn't this a new regulation for this year? I don't recall seeing it last year. Either way, most portables have the plastic slip cover on the front, so it is easy enough to throw on there quick.
Pat K
I was fishing with a guy on Prior last year that had been warned twice about having identification on his portable. The 3rd time cost him around $185.
OnAFly
I got warned last year, it was the day we bought the thing ad took it out and a CO found us. He gave us a warning and we put the numbers on the next day. It's not tough to do, just needs to be done.
rusty rapala
How much does a house license cost if you decided to leave it out over night?
luv2fish
This law was new 3 winters ago (I believe). It really is a quick and easy thing to do. On my Otter Lodge, I went and bought the numbers from Fleet Farm. Stuck them on a piece of paper, then covered the paper with packing tape (poor mans laminating ) Then just leave it in the window. I have an Ice Castle too, but I never leave it over night unless I am sleeping in it. Remember the law is UNATTENDED over night, not just over night. I did get checked once by a CO up there, and he confirmed all of the above.
MarkAlm
What I do for this is cut a 5/32 thick board about 3 inches high and make numbers with sticky #'s or draw them out and fill in with marker . Then I mount with a couple stainless screws on the back part of the sled on my trap. no marking then on the trap canvas. Also I would use the dnr number, supposedly this number will always stay with you, unlike your d.l. which will change!
RebelSS
MarkAlm has a good point. Use the DNR #, which will be with you forever. If it hasn't already, when you renew your license it will be upgraded to the new system. That from a buddy who's a MN CO. I picked up one of the sheets of stencils with numbers, stenciled them on my shack, and used spray paint made for vinyl/plastic to spray them on. OnAFly
MNDNR numbers are great because you don't have to leave a nunch of personal info out in the open. I just printed it off and laminated it at work.
tip_upclyma
The DNR gave me a warning last year because I did not have any identification on it....so needless to say, my Yukon now has my MN DNR # on the back of it!
Ed Carlson
However you do it, I would do it. Shacks have handy license and ID windows built into them now, so it is not hard to do.I spoke with a local Warden and they said they would be much stricter on it this season. Tracking shacks at a distance, theft issues, they want to get them ID'ed so they have less dead end reports to fallow up on. I kinda see there point, without it, most shacks all look alike. I didn't know a fine could be as large as $185 though....YIKES...that would bite!
silverbulletguy
I thought porty's didn't have to have any info unless they were unoccupied on the ice. I remember reading a post last winter about the debate of a porty not set up but on the ice next to a perm(with people sleeping inside) and whether or not it needed info on it because it wasn't being used as a shelter at the time is was unoccupied.
