Portable License Question?

Gander in Fargo will offer a service to do Laminated Portable Shelter License signs up for ice shacks very soon. Pretty cheap too, single side one state $5, double sided format for two states with two sets of license info, just $8.

Give the required info, and look around a bit, and pick it up at Costumer Service when your done, should take about 10 minutes to do or less. Laminated thus waterproof, so they will last.

Straight out of the regulation booklet, bottom of page 61. Pretty clear...

The following regulations apply to all shelters used on all Minnesota

waters, unless otherwise noted elsewhere in this booklet.

• All shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the

(1) complete name and address, (2) driver’s license number, or (3) the

nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly

and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches

in height.

• A shelter may not be left unattended between midnight and one hour prior

to sunrise unless the shelter is licensed.

Note: The Dept. of Public Safety - DVS now requires trailers used to haul

fish houses or dark houses and enclosed trailers or recreational trailers

used for fishing to be registered. See your local Deputy Registrar for

trailer registration.

This bit get me..... If a shelter is required to be licensed or marked, why is there a stipulation on leaving an unmarked shelter? What that says to me is that you can leave an un marked shelter unattended in the day light....

I'm not trying to be difficult and i know the easy answer is to just mark my little pop up, but my little pop up is pretty innefficient to mark since it folds up like a tent

I don't recall seeing 1 protable with this ID on them last year. Been checks several times the last 2 years no DNR officer has ever said anything to me.... U'd think they would at least let me know, maybe a warning or something? None of them have said a thing...

This law was new 3 winters ago (I believe). It really is a quick and easy thing to do. On my Otter Lodge, I went and bought the numbers from Fleet Farm. Stuck them on a piece of paper, then covered the paper with packing tape (poor mans laminating :)) Then just leave it in the window.

I have an Ice Castle too, but I never leave it over night unless I am sleeping in it. Remember the law is UNATTENDED over night, not just over night. I did get checked once by a CO up there, and he confirmed all of the above.

What I do for this is cut a 5/32 thick board about 3 inches high and make numbers with sticky #'s or draw them out and fill in with marker .

Then I mount with a couple stainless screws on the back part of the sled on my trap. no marking then on the trap canvas.

Also I would use the dnr number, supposedly this number will always stay with you, unlike your d.l. which will change!

MarkAlm has a good point. Use the DNR #, which will be with you forever. If it hasn't already, when you renew your license it will be upgraded to the new system. That from a buddy who's a MN CO. I picked up one of the sheets of stencils with numbers, stenciled them on my shack, and used spray paint made for vinyl/plastic to spray them on.

However you do it, I would do it. Shacks have handy license and ID windows built into them now, so it is not hard to do.

I spoke with a local Warden and they said they would be much stricter on it this season. Tracking shacks at a distance, theft issues, they want to get them ID'ed so they have less dead end reports to fallow up on. I kinda see there point, without it, most shacks all look alike.

I didn't know a fine could be as large as $185 though....YIKES...that would bite!

I thought porty's didn't have to have any info unless they were unoccupied on the ice. I remember reading a post last winter about the debate of a porty not set up but on the ice next to a perm(with people sleeping inside) and whether or not it needed info on it because it wasn't being used as a shelter at the time is was unoccupied.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
