GULP MAGGOTS // PLASTICS

Someone gave me about a dozen Gulp alive waxies last winter. I thought they were great, and the panfish seemed to agree. I use Little Atom or Maki plastics more than half of the time. They're excellent. Between Gulp and the little ice plastics, I may not buy live waxies at all this year.

I have some Gulp! maggots that I used last year, figuring they would be a much better option than the real thing. While they were very convenient, I still had better luck on actual waxworms. Not to say they didn't work, just not as well. On the other hand, I use a ton of plastics with good success. They seem to work much better early and late, with live bait being the best inbetween.

I have used the gulp maggots, and picked up some 1" minnows at the ice fishing show. The advantages I see for using gulp is they do not die, and my wife is not afraid to touch them. If you have kids they are also easy for them to use.

There have been times where I am graphing crappies and they wont bite on real waxies. I throw a gulp maggot on and bam, the bite is on. I am also looking to try the plastic minnow heads this year. Do they have them at GM or FF?

The Gulp Magots and Waxies do work. We find them usefull in tipping small #3 Chubby Darters as they do not mess up the action as baddly as meat does. For larger scent chunks like whole minnow heads, I prefer to carry Salted Fatheads, and then pinch them off or use them whole depending on the situation. They store and travel easy, and no water pails to slop about in my portable.

The Little Atoms Plastics are very productive scent and attraction options. Seen them really tear up the perch and Gills, even walleyes. I just ordered up some more tonight in anticipation of being on some perch by weeks end.

I also ordered up a bottle of the Atoms Formula #9 scent, the additive they use to flavor the plastics with. Good stuff, and with a bit of old school ingenuity I will be making my own stash of scented plastics with the LA-#9 formula.

A tip... is take a razor blade and pick some bass plastics out that the colors work for you and slice slivers thick at first and then cross cut into 4 pieces so you get a final sliver that is triangular in shape and tapers off to a thin point. Now soak in the scent option of your choice...Gulp Juice, LA-#9, Dr. Juice, Snuss Spit..whatever turns ya on.

Storing up a selection of colors in a Lindy Tube-It rig makes for easy selection on the ice. The little tubes are handy for the pre-scented home engenered plastics. wink

I picked up some of the Gulp! Alive Minnow Heads at Thorne Bros the other day. The only color they had was "Glow Red" which is odd because they don't actually glow...also, I'm not sure if there even are other colors for the minnow heads.
