laker1
in your area ? I hunt permit area 172 and you can notice a trend of declining deer in the area. I think in 2010 that area should be a lottery zone. What do you think of your permit area should zoned as lottery or etc. ?
BobT
"Is the DNR giving too many permits, just right, or not enough?"I'm not a biologist so I guess I can't answer that question. I might have an opinion though. I believe the DNR is doing what it believes is in the best interest of both herd and society. There's a balancing act that must be maintained. Some members of society would prefer deer be all but eliminated...some members of society would prefer things as they are...some members of society would prefer we create a tophy bonanza...etc. The deer? They just want room to be born, grow up, mate, and die peacfully.
ntrider
i don't think without having all the data the dnr does there is any way to know...the last few yrs my area has been an intensive harvest area and we barely saw any deer...the last 2 yrs the farmers starting planting corn nearby and even though we went from intensive to management this yr is by far the most deer we have seen...so according to the dnr, numbers are lower however based on there being lower numbers we have seen more deer probably because of the wheres and whats of the farmers putting their crops...i think you have to take a look at what is going on in your specific area and may have to do with that??? Musky Buck
It does have a lot to do in crop country, however I haven't heard too many farmers complain of the deer hammering their crops in the past 3-4 years. Before that seen as a nuisance, lately the farmers ask me where'd they all go, combined 240 acres of corn and saw 3, used to be 33 or more. They are just thinned down a bit for now. Sutty
I think they need to offer way more wolf tags
bigfoot
I hunt 170 and the past few years it has been intensive harvest. Last year it should have been managed like it was this year. Now it will probably be lottery next year. Well the DNR got the population down but i think it could have been brought down more gradually. Then again there are other factors that affect their population that can't be accounted for during the season, such as a harsh winter. 96trigger
They are doing things right, but I would like to see a more steady system. Lou once put the numbers out of how many people tag 1,2,3,4,and 5 deer. very few people ever tag deer 4 and 5. I would like to see a max of 3 deer per hunter. I love to be able to go all three seasons. I can also tell you that it has probably saved the lives of more than a few smaller bucks. Lots of people keep holding out and holding out waiting and then never get one, often passing on lots of little ones. However, this is for areas where the deer population can sustain these types of numbers, there are areas that can't, and they should be managed so. All things go through population increases and decreases. It is the basic relationship between predator and prey. One is high while the other is low, then they switch places over time. Dave S
Based on what goes through the yard on a daily basis, they could offer a management tag on the East side of the MN River. The deer are only starting to herd up around here. Based on the past few years, the few turned into a few more which turned into a herd of 25-30 deer last year. If this trend continues, we'll have 40+ deer within a couple hundred acres this winter. bigbucks
I hunt primarily 213 which just went to lottery this year from managed. We didn't see a lot of deer during gun season, but saw quite a few during bow season. The population is down from what it was, but is still fine. I think it's about right.I also hunt 214 a lot which went from intensive to managed this year which also seems about right. There are clearly more deer here than in 213, but not as many as there were a few years ago.Overall I'd have to say keep up the good work guys to the DNR.
