Yanks in 6. Grew up 30 minutes from Yankee stadium so I am a little biased. I know a lot of people hate them and their payroll but honestly what would you expect them to do with the fact that there is no salary cap and the Yankees have the highest revenue? As much as people hate them lets say the Pohlad's had revenue of 300 million. Do you think they would have a payroll of 200 million and pocket 100 million in profit or would they have a payroll of 100 million and pocket 200 million? Pretty sure you know the answer. Should their be a salary cap, most definately but as long as their isnt one I expect them to spend the most since they have the highest revenue. Just thought I would try and make my point before all the bashers start in on them. GO YANKS

really-- when's the last time a team with the highest payroll won it all??

Buying a team doesn't equal a team.

The Yanks in 96,98,99,00 did it with clutch players, not big name players other than of course JETER,POSADA and #42.

Sick and tired about hearing about the Yanks payroll and this and that about the Yanks. IF the TWins and Angels didn't self destruct,, you'd maybe not even be talking about it. The Yanks flat out execute, and I don't care how much $$,, they get it done.

I agree with Madcutter and wmn luv me walleye fearme. The problem is not with the Yankees, it's with MLB. If the Twins had the greatest revenue in MLB everyone here would certainly expect them to go after the best free agents in order to try and win a championship.

Why do people have to dislike one team to love another?

Big Dave- agree 100%

what it really comes down to is, 40 pennants and 26 time Champs.

Beat the best, and you'll be the best.

Start Spreading the News.

People get sick and tired, becasue they are not the ones winning. Well, do something about it.

Both the Twins and the Angles had chances, and blew it.

You never hear that,, it's always the Yanks payroll.

Give me a break, they are human athletes in a game that usually goes either way. Fair or Foul etc.(baseball has an awful lot of luck involved in the game) It comes down to being sound and executing plays in the late innings.

I'll take Jeter on a ground ball to him in the 9th,, over anybody in the history of the game to EXECUTE. FUNDAMENTALS!!

i dont think its fair they get to spend all this money, unlike the other teams in the MLB. i think it should be somewhat fair!

I can't disagree with that either.

But all I am saying is you can't pin the blame on a team for this situation. I am a huge Twins fan and could care less if the Yankees win or loose but I have to applaude the Yankees for spending their money on better players to try and win for their fans. The Twins could still have one of the best center fielders in baseball and one of the best starting pitchers also if it were not for finances. The Yankees could take a larger chunk of the revenue as profit but they choose to bring in players like C.C. Sabathia and A-Rod to try and win games and championships. Other teams had first chances at those players but decided that they would rather save monet and get rid of them. I certainly don't blame the players that go to the Yankee's and I don't blame the team, I blame MLB.

the high budget teams also get the best draft picks because they can afford to sign them. the nationals we're debating on drafting strasburg only because they thought they might not be able to sign him (and it took a while). something like 6 teams passed on Jeter because they didn't want to pay to sign him. it happens every year, where teams pass on the best players because they can't/won't pay the big money it takes to sign them.

this needs to be addressed more so than a few teams being able to sign big money free agents IMO.

Money CAN BUY a championship. Everybody says how great the Yankees are, and there right, they are a very good team and they should be at the price. There average salary is over 7 million a player, while the Twins for instance a little over 2 million. Yes you have to spend it to get it done, but equalize it out and then let the games begin. A cap of 100 million lets say, and that is a too much, as no human being is worth that period. No luxury tax if you go over that amount. You cannot go over 100 million period. How good a team would New York be, having to cut over 100 million from their payroll. who would you cut.

Another reason to have a cap is also for the fans in that state or city. I looked up World series pricing out of NY and Philly and there would be no way in he!! I and alot and I mean alot of people could afford to go. Prices start at 233.00 and top out at 15000.00. As we further into the series, and you want to go to game 7 if needed, pricing will start at 312.00 and top out at 99000.00. That is unbelievable, and out of hand. At those prices you will NOT see many kids in the stands.

So put a cap in place and get everybody on equal ground and LETS PLAY BALL. IMO

In baseball the players union is much to strong to allow a cap. Its not going to happen anytime in the near future. They would have to ruin a whole season and lock them out all year for that to happen, and after the last time that happened it temporarily destroyed their fanbase until mcgwire/sosa they would never risk that happening again. Money doesnt win championships but it does help get there for sure. As a Yankees fan looking in on the Twins you guys have one of the worst owners out there. Great development, farm system etc but unfortunately the pohlad's treat it like a business not a hobby. After all that whining about the metrodome you will find out how cheap the pohlads still are. If they wanted to win they could easily swell their payroll significantly over the next 5-10 years with the jump in their revenue stream.

Best example of this is cleveland. Cleveland built a new stadium back in 1995 and immediately they became one of the highest paid teams in baseball for the next 7 years (until their rev started plummeting again)They went to 2 world series (granted Jose Mesa blew one badly but at least they got there) They are not a bigger market then minn/st paul but if you have a owner who view it solely as a business there's no reason to increase the payroll. They can bring it up slightly and watch all the extra money go into their pocket instead of rewarding the fans who's tax payer money built the stadium and increase the value of his franchise dramatically. As far as ticket prices at Yankee stadium that does completely suck. When I was in highschool we used to go about 10-12 times a summer and pay 8 dollars for a bleacher seat. No way I could have afforded to do that anymore if I was a highschool kid. (they still have some bleacher seats for i believe 15 dollars but I heard from a couple friends the cheap seats are basically impossible to get at the new Yankee stadium)

Very few, if any owners view any pro sport as a hobby. Pro sports are a business, a huge business, complete with unions.

To the players its a business, to the owners its a business, to the union its a business and to the agents its a business.

The only thing that provides extra cash and therefore better players is the revenue stream and unfortunately, very few teams enjoy the revenue that the Yankees have available to them.I agree, if the added revenue comes as a result of the stadium and the peripherals then the payroll should increase as well but don't believe for a second that all owners aren't in it for the money and the money alone - they know its big business.

I disagree with you a bit on that one. A lot of owners view it as a hobby vs a business. Granted none of them want to lose money but guys like Mark Cuban, Dan Snyder (who is a complete moron) Al davis, steinbrenner and even Ziggi Wilf would rather win more games and have less profit then win fewer games and have more profit. A lot of these guys are so wealthy they no longer view profit as their main motive. They would rather win titles. (or spend way to much money for crappy free agents like snyder does) Even though the pohlads are one of the richest owners in sports I honestly believe they would rather make 20 million bottom line then spend 10 million more on payroll, win more games and make 10 million bottom line. If you were a cubs fan you should want a guy like Cuban buying your team. Even though he is one of the most annoying people around there is no doubt he would spend whatever he could to try and win. Well thats it for me today, only post on the company dime and going fishing for the afternoon.

Points well made but it will be interesting when Ziggy is faced with the fact that he may have to pay for his own stadium or move the Vikes. The Los Angeles Vikings? - makes about as much sense as the Los Angeles Lakers. Ziggy has some strong business decisions to make in the next few years.

Now I'm reminded why people shouldn't get upset when the Yanks run AL teams over to get to World Series...cheer for them to get there and then cheer for the National League to win so they go home empty handed!

Nice game one for Philly!

because I hate the yankees the phillies are temporarily my favorite team for the next week. what was really weird tonight was watching my temporarily favorite team go into yankee stadium and not wet their pants. I'm just not used to seeing that given my usual favorite team does that pretty regularly when they visit NY.

any of you old enough like me to remember charlie manuel as a Twin player many years ago? can't remember the years but had to be about the time killebrew played (or maybe after he was done and we were in the craig kusick 1baseman era?)

hopefully gardy will visit with him a little in the offseason and pick up a few pointers on how to get the team to not be so dang intimidated by the yanks next year.

What bugs me about the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and other high dollar teams is the fact they get their pick of all the international players. For example- some hot shot pitcher from Cuba and the Yankees grab him. An OFer from Japan and Dodgers grab him. To me, these players need to be drafted, which means teams like the Royals, Nationals, etc get fair shake at them. I don't like the fact they can just be signed and can forego the draft

The game went exactly how I predicted it would! grin Lee pitched an excellent game, wish he could've kept the shutout, but at least it was an un earned run. A-roid and texeira went hitless. And the philly batters' plate appearances against sabathia were perfect! They waited and worked up the count, it seemed like every batter worked the count to 3-2. I do believe pedro will do well in game 2. I'm pretty sure philly will light up burnett.

last nights game sucked. Would suck even worse though to be a Cleveland fan watching those two go at it last night. Wasted a pretty good game from CC. If the Phillies dont get to Burnett in the 1st he will settle down and Yankees will win. Plus he has less of a tendency to blow up at home which helps. (think of him as the Yankees version of Radke, 1st inning dicey, after he settles down he's tough to beat) Yankees will get some runs off martinez. For the most part even when he was younger they hit him decently well. He didnt refer to the Yankees as his Daddy for nothing

I agree with you about Cleveland. They had a team full of all stars and now they are all playing for different playoff teams because of the unfair salary structure in MLB.

Cliff Lee

CC Sabathia

Victor Martinez

Manny Ramirez

Casey Blake

Jim Thome

Think they could win with some of those guys mixed in with Sizemore, Haefner and the rest? You darn right they could. They would be on of the best teams in baseball.
