Deer hunting reg question

Recommended Posts

Hey all:

Usually I know the intricacies, but I'd like a little help on this one.

I live in what's now a lottery unit (Ely area), but I can hunt out by the family lake cabin near Bemidji, which is a managed unit.

If I buy my standard deer license here in Ely, it's my belief that I can use it to tag a deer of either sex over in the managed units near Bemidji, and that I also can buy a bonus permit and tag an antlerless deer in a managed unit. Both units are in Zone 3, if that matters.

Am I right?

Steve if you shoot a doe in the management zone, buy a management tag and use it there. Keep your lottery tag for the buck in your home zone......If you shoot a doe first, use that management tag first, it allows you to save your either sex license for that buck

steve, yes your regular license is either sex in a managment area and yes you can buy a managment permit to use on a antlerless deer there. Buck only, if not successful in the lottery, in the lottery area.

And I belive you mean both areas are in zone 1, not 3.

Thanks for the correction, man. DOH! gringrin

I figured as much based on the way I understood the regs but just wanted a bit of agreement in here. So it's easiest for me to buy the license and bonus tag here in Ely before heading west.

Interesting that the DNR big game guy in Tower wanted 115 split into two units. The eastern part is low in deer because it's basically BWCAW border. The western part around Cook/Orr has a lot more deer. He wanted eastern 115 to be folded into 116 and the western part of 115 folded into the closest unit to the west. So by splitting, both areas would be attached to like deer-producing areas, with 116 traditionally being lottery and the unit west of 115 being managed.

That made a lot of sense to him and a lot of sense to me. Apparently it didn't make much sense to the higher-ups. Instead, they made all of 115 lottery and I snoozed on the antlerless application.

Let me get this right. I will hunt opening week end in 167, a managed area and possibly the second week end in 175, a lottery area, where I have an antlerless permit. Can i buy a bonus tag for 167, take a deer opening week end. And still use the take a second deer the next week end, buck or antlerless in 175? Buck or doe? Not sure if I will, but am wondering about the legal options here.

Yes, If first hunting in a management area go out and get yourself a bonus/antlerless tag. If you shoot a doe then tag it with your bonus tag.

Then you would still be open to using your original license/tag in a lottery area on either a buck or a doe since you stated that you were successful in the antlerless drawing for the lottery area that you applied/plan to hunt.

What do you need to get the management tag, where do you pick it up and do you have to buy it before the season or is there a 24hr. waiting period if you buy it during the season like the reg license.

You can get a bonus tag from the same place you get your regular license. You can buy it at anytime during the season and there is no waiting period to worry about. You need to have the tag before you shoot your deer though.
