New Yamaha motor

Anyone see the new video on the redesigned Yamaha motor? I think it was release today.

Not sure if I can post links here, but the link is something like: yamaha game changer dot com. Its worth a quick look wink

If what they show is true, Evinrude and Merc will have a lot of catching up to do (in more ways than one!)

Yea its just a teaser really, but there's definately a huge difference between the two. The slower boat is the same rig with the current-day HPDI Series 2. The faster boat has the new Yamaha SHO. Its not just a little bit faster, its a lot faster out of the hole with more top end speed to boot.

This is just speculation, but I wonder if they figured out a way to throw a small turbo into this thing? The use of the 'SHO' (super high output) acronym reminds me of the motor Yamaha built for Ford that went into the Taurus SHO.

I would like to see better economy (Oil and fuel consumption are less than ideal) and some speed to boot. The new series 2's that I have seen seem to be more mellow than the original HPDI's. Hopefully this new SHO will put Yamaha one top for top end speed and hole shot, a place they were never at with the HPDI's.

Will be interesting to see it what it ends up to be. A strong running four stroke will get some attention if thats what it is. I'm running a 300 HPDI series 2 right now and 100% satisfied with the performance of it but....always open to other options!

I have heard this from a number of dealers that yamaha is getting out the to 2 stroke business. I personally would never want a 4 stroke on the back of my bass boat. In all honesty, is there a future for 4 strokes in the bass boat market?

I think thats where the future lies for sure, Im not loving it but it is what it is. 4-strokes will perform better the more they tweek them, but my favorite part of a 2-stroke is the sound, well the power too!

So you wouldn't like a 4 stroke on a bass boat if it was faster, had a better hole shot, and better on gas plus no burning of oil?

How's the typewriter working for you? Do you have plumbing in your house, or do you use an outhouse?;) I'm just playing, but seriously the technology of the future is here, and it takes 4 strokes.

No I wouldnt like to have a 4 stroke on my bass boat. I just cant see that happening. I think Yamaha will make a really strong marketing push on this 4 stroke but I cant see it having better holeshot, being any better on gas than some of the current DFI engines or being any lighter. I can see it maybe having better topend.

The maintenance factor wont be any better, there are a lot more moving parts on those 4 strokes.

Like TR21 stated mercury tried this with the Verado (which is a pretty darn advanced 4 stroke). When this engine first came out they pushed it just like Yamaha is going to do by claiming all of the benefits talked about.

I dont want to eat what I am saying down the road but I will be very surprised if they can accomplish all of what they are saying. If they can more power to them and they proved me wrong.

If its fast, lightweight and efficient it will get noticed but will have alot to prove regardless. With all the emission laws getting tighter all the time will the whole industry be four strokes with time? Could be. Hard to imagine not having a two stroke on the back. Would I by the first generation of this motor? Probably not.

Why a 4 stroke though? Doesn't the E tec achieve the same emission results and better performance with less moving parts with a 2 stroke? You would think the technology is here to implement those kind of results.I know the newer HPDI or Optimax motors are real close as far as the emissions and certainly exceed the performance aspect of a 4 stroke.

Etec's are close on the emissions but I don't think they are at the 4-stroke level. I know that a lot of guys have had problems with e-tecs, so I will not have a boat with one on it until they resolve the issues...

Supposedly this new 4 stroke technology will be faster, more powerful, more reliable, and more efficient than today's souped up 2-strokes -- 0 sacrifices and multiple improvements (unless the sound your motor makes is more important than these things).

It sounds too good to be true, I agree. BUT -- if it IS true, it truly will be a GAME CHANGER for the outboard motor industry.

Do you really think Yamaha would drop their whole HPDI line if they hadn't designed something that was better in every aspect!? They had A TON OF MONEY into the HPDI design and brand and they are dropping it all for this new technology. Thats a pretty big deal!

In my opinion, most bass fisherman love new technology and new products, especially those that are better, faster, and more efficient.
