Coach1310
Just wondering what you guys all use as a base layer when hunting. I seem to get cold rather easily and part of it has to do with getting sweaty on my walk in. What do you recommend for a base layer? Moisture wicking? Thanks
S.D. Ice Angular
Under Armour!!!!Well worth the money...I where it for work for play and anytime I am out doing something outside from now until March.
picksbigwagon
+1 on Under armour, although if you get really sweaty on your walk to the stand, carry your outer layers in a back pack so you stay cool, then climb you stand wait 10 minutes and put the outer layers on. Make sure you are as windproof as you can get, that is really important to staying warm. My main hunting coat is the windproof cabelas berber fleece. that with a UA shirt keeps me plenty warm on stand
onthefly
I'd go with a 100% merino wool. The material wicks moisture, insulates when wet and absorbs odor. I bought the smartwool sock combo with thin merino liners and heavy wool socks. My feet never get cold, but did in polypropelene, cotton, etc. Now, I'm saving for a good wool base layer,
mrklean
I love under armour best investment, very true about sweating on the way to your stand
jigging-matt
I finally tried the Under Armour last year and yes it is well worth it. Wish I would have tried it sooner.
mabr
Folks I hear all this praise for under armour and I dont doubt it. But what makes it that much better? I have duofold, UltraTherm, Thermasilk, all pricy stuff. What makes underarmor that much better? I deal with the cold by layering up. Do you not have to put layers on with underarmor? I typically bow hunt all the way till the end of the season last day in december, and between layering and the chemical heaters keep me toasty through it all. I am in no way doubting that it works but I question how much better it is if at all. I guess it is the bargain shopper in me. Im also not going to purchase a Gloomis rod when my allstar rods work just as good in my opinion. Please dont take me as being down on anyone for using it or paying what it costs. We all spend plenty on our hunting and fishing gear, and i for one want to know what im paying for. I own a Ranger Boat, I know why I paid more for it as compared to a Skeeter, Triton etc and I justified it (some say Im nuts for that). Im just asking the same thing about Underarmor. 96trigger
Under armour is a great base layer if you buy the right stuff, it dries almost instantly so if you sweat walking to your stand, you will have no problem with a dry layer. but you have to layer smart. I for one, don't care much for the underarmour. I find it very cold against my skin when sitting. I will say this, as soon as I start walking or moving, the stuff gets hot. I still wear it and use it, but I am not sold on it being the greatest thing since sliced bread. My layers usually include an underarmour base, then a cabelas mid weight 3/4 zip mock, then a hodgemans fleece wader liner, and finally scentlock guide series rain suede. Great for temps above 30 degrees. Below 30 I break out the insulated jackets.

96trigger
Its really nothing more that two tight t-shirt type layers, a fleece top, and an unlined jacket.
SM1
If you get sweaty on your walk in, than 100% take some layers off and put them on after sitting in your stand for 10 min or so like stated above. Getting sweaty wet and then sitting in the stand is the worst!!I also get sweaty easy on my walk in so I dress very light and put my extra clothes in my backpack or carry them in by hand. For my walk in I usually wear long johns under my pants, coat and light/thin beanie hat. Then I will also have with me bibs, 2-3 extra layers of fleece, thick hat and fleece neck warmer(a must have!). This has worked good for me and my all day sits in 25-30 degree weather with 15 mph winds. Obviously adjust for temp.I use some UA, but I do like fleece and wool. CodyDawg
I really like UA for when you are active and sweating. When you are just sitting it is no better than anything else; in fact I dont think it is very warm at all.I have started using Smartwool and I really like that so far, but havent used it a lot. After this season I will know more.
96trigger
Took the words out or my mouth CodyDawg. Great stuff for more active situations. Not the warmest for sitting. However, as a base layer, I like that its tight and keeps the moisture away frm my skin.
