Elk Hunting In Utah

My buddy I believe found out they had a bunch of Excess Tags for Utah. He's never been in the state but has a Muzzleloader Tag for a Bull. He had his choice of Cow In-Mature Bull or a Bull and he figured extra like 50 bucks for a bull was worth it. We'll see what happens later this year. He did buy the tag mid summer though when he was messing around on the computer. GOod luck

Yup, like mrklean said- some smasher bulls there. However, most of the state is draw and anywhere you'd likely find some of those high 300's bulls is definitely draw. I dream of hunting the San Juans some day... Actually, it's not completely a dream- building pref points, but it'll take a lot of them to draw the tag I want.

I had some pref points for Utah but quit - too much $$$ for me. If I could afford it I would - no doubt some excellent elk hunting there.

Coots, do you mean PP building is just too pricy for ya or do you mean it is in Utah? Utah is actually one of the most affordable states to build PP's. It's a little bit complicated to explain how, but you can get PP's in Utah for only $42.50/year. Obviously, that adds up over time, but that's a whole lot cheaper than AZ ($158.75/year) or NV ($157/year)! I REALLY want to get a tag in AZ- there are a couple zones there that I'd give my left... um... arm for. However, they're about 15 years of PP's, and I can't see dumping that kind of money into an animal.

world record elk was shot in utah last year, scoot you could always just buy the governers tag there speed up the proces wink

All I can do is dream about something like that... I do have a lottery ticket in my wallet that I haven't checked though. Dreamin' is good sometimes...

Scoots - more bitter at the price increase than the actual amount. Used to be $10 - supply and demand goes into action and it goes up to $50, or almost. I'll have to check back into it, suppost I lost my points - have any idea how long you keep them without applying?

No- I don't have a clue how long they last. I know some states dump them after a couple years of inactivity, but I don't know any details or what states do this.

Yeah, it's becoming a rich man's game. I'm anything but rich, but I'd sure like to play...

FYI- a buddy of mine went to the area we hunted in WY this Sep and will be doing a write up in the archery forum. He had a whale of a hunt and it should be interesting...

FYI, you can buy just a bonus point for each species if you want. Then when you are ready to start putting in, you will have some points in the system. This year, they issued 500 bull rifle tags in unit 10. Seems like everyone i know has a tag up there. What areas are you thinking of Scoot

Are you asking about AZ or UT? For UT, I've got a connection on a San Juan hunt that'd be second to none. However, as you suggest- I'll be buying PPs for many more years before I even bother to apply for it. If you're asking about AZ, I've got a connection for a tag there that will point me in the right direction, but I don't know the unit yet. I'm a good decade out from bothering to apply to AZ too... Point creep is going to be the death of me! Areas that require 10 points now will need 15 by the time I'm ready to apply to them. But, not much I can do about it...

The obvious solution is to win the lottery...

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
