Cats must be mainstream now, saw this at a state arts competition:

I used to work for an art publisher...Hadley House (The Wooden Bird). I was always after guys like James Meger and Al Agnew to do some catfish. I guess nobody figured it would sell...I wsh I could paint!

I can draw just about any animal. Was my first attempt at a person and it seemed to come out great.... Adding more to my portfolio and than hoping to sell some.

Nice to see someone else dabbling in some drawing.

I've gotten out of the habit the last year or two but have been thinking I should start up again.

Here are a few I've done in the past.

I have tried working with charcoal. Too messy for me. I always wend up smearing stuff where I do not want it. The elephant is in charcoal.

charcoal takes some practice for sure, and then at the end of the drawing I always go back over it with an eraser to clean it up. On the Steven Tyler picture most of the white areas are areas that I went back over with an eraser, what you are seeing is the white paper.

I just use a couple different pencils and so some shading and than use my finger to smear it for blending purposes. works well

I have a stringer of hand-widdled catfish hanging above my bed...really cool wood and scuplting.

Have you ever tried using blending stumps. They are just rolled paper that you can get at any art supply store, they are like 5 for $1. They work really well and all for finer detail in the shading. It also helps keep the drawing cleaner because you can keep the lead off of your fingers.

When using pencil I use usually 8-10 different pencils all with varying shades. Using the really heavy black pencils for adding some of the dark shadows really makes a draw pop. Adding enough contrast between lights and darks is where you can add more life to a drawing.

I have one, but hate using it. Too much time involved. My drawings usually take me an hour or 2 at most. I don't mind a little dirty original. gives it a little character in my opinion
