Smallmouth or Largemouth?

River smallies are really a blast.... My son and I float the Mississippi several times during the summer and catch some really large fish and they really pull hard.

All in all I am a bass fisherman even though I fish walleyes some. Doesn't matter to me which species I catch they are both a great sport fish and offer a challenge to catch.

Last fish ever? On my dieing bed? I get one more cast? Maybe a big ole gob of crawler for a sturgeon.

However if you held a gun to my head and made me choose, I would probably lean more towards the greenies.. I think you can predict them better.. I probably enjoy catching a large Smallie better, but enjoy fishing for Largies better. Hows that for waffeling?

To be honest, if I were on my dead bed.. I would probably try to take everything out of my boat and try to break the 80MPH mark in my boat.. Or die trying. Sad thing is, I know my boat in the hands of someone who had a clue would hit 80 no prob.. but in my hands its best is 77.2mph.

yeah i like a lil bit of a challenge as well...thats why smallies are so fun to fish for...one day you can catch 100 fish and a week later you will catch 10-20. or if you fish smallies on milles a good days is catchin 10-20 fish and then the next day you go you only get a couple...thats happened a couple times to me up on mille lacs this year, mille lacs can be a challenging lake to fish.

if anyone is ever in South Dakota you should try going to lake sharpe on the missouri river...you can have 100 fish days where the average is 2.5-3 and that definitely doesnt get boring.

The cat has officially exited the bag smile

Awesome smallmouth fishery. Utterly ignored by the walleye heads out there. I don't know if you've found the same thing, but the fish there seem to top out at @ 3.5 lbs though.

Hiya -

I think part of why I like smallies so much is they can be SO unpredictable and fickle. There are days when you fish your tail off, catch 8 or 10, and still feel like you conquered the world. Every time you think you have smallmouths figured out, they go to extraordinary lengths to prove you wrong. You get days where a green pumpkin tube with purple flake will outfish a plain green pumpkin tube 5-1. Then you get the days where color, size - none of it seems to matter. You could put hooks on a set of car keys and catch 50. I think the attention to detail it takes makes them a fun challenge. And of course, fighting like a demon helps too... smile

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

I think smallie fishing is much more predictable. I just look at my log books and go to all my spots, use certain lures/colors at certain times of years and never have a problem catching them. Theres lakes I fish in the BWCA where I swear to God, you get either a bite or fish on EVERY cast with a senko. Largemouth are more challenging IMO.

yeah its definitely an awesome smallie fishery. ive caught a lot of 3-3.75 out of there but never got one over the 4lb mark. the walleye fisherman are startin to get mad at how many smallies are in there, its kinda funny. i dont know why they would be mad at something that fights like crazy...i guess they are just use to something that feels like a wet towel being dragged through the water

I'll tell you what. The walleyes I catch on Rainy Lake fight alot harder than any smallmouth Ive ever caught.

Any of you having luck for smallies on the Crioux or Mississippe? I've fished them the past few weeks and not a whole lot to show. I have a kitchen pass for the next two days and just want to get out and catch bass (smallmouth, largemouth, white bass) and have no idea what to do. I've looked at lots of posts and no real strong recomendations have come up. Any of you have the secret water or an Extreme net man that could help me?

My last 2 outings on the croix haven't been so hot, about a dozen total smallies between the 2 trips.

I don't like to be challenged when it comes to smallie fishing...I have enough challenges during the vacation as is (road construction, truck breaking down, busting up lower unit, etc) when I'm on the water I want it to be as easy as possible grin

Are you telling me to find other waters to fish over the weekend? Its looking like one of my last outings this year and just want a good day of smallies. If its not that good please give me a heads up? I see you and a few others are all over this thinkgs so I'll take your words of wisdom.

thanks for the tip. I'll have to pull the fly rod out and a few poppers and head that way. They are a blast.

I forgot to mention though. I only go there on the weekdays when there are no pleasure boaters out there. I don't know how it is on the weekends, but good luck!

Warmwater, I'd still head to the croix if your deadset on it. As mentioned before, you can catch 30 one day and only a couple the next. Plus you might hit a school of white bass...or a nice pike, or slab crappie, walleye, sauger, catfish, muskie, rock bass, sheephead, carp, mooneye, etc.

But if you change your mind at the last second and want to catch bucketmouths instead, nearby big marine and big carnelian should tickle your fancy...mostly for numbers, but there's a few big ones in there.

thanks for the heads up... went out on Saturday morning on the crouix. Got the idea I might want to find new water as the muskie tourney was going on and they were tossing some big stuff that scared me and I'm sure the bass away. Hit the MN rock shore all the way up from the kinni and did ok (a dozzen smallies).

Forgive me as I'm not real familiar with big marine and big carnelia. Are the local lakes? I'm looking to head out for the evening on Wed. to catch either smallies or lagemouth.

I really appreciate your help on everything.

ha I agree. Smallies never get boaring. I watched your video on the cannon. Nice fish. I was out south of Northfield (near some park with a shelter, not sure of the parks name) found a nice hole and caught about a dozen smallies and 3 eyes all on the fly rod. What stretch do you fish?
