Can deer read?

Recommended Posts

Was quite a day. Saw lots of stuff but didn't get as many photos as I should have. Had a wolf cross the road in front of me on my way to work, had the camera on the seat next to me but the wolf got into the brush before I could get a shot. Chased a kestral around for awhile, but didn't get anything worth posting. I did get this and figured I'd lead with it:

Went down the Fernberg a little further and saw two deer who had fallen through the ice on Garden Lake. They were struggling pretty good.

They'd gone about 50 yards through ice that wouldn't support them by the time I saw them. They'd struggle for a bit, then lay still for awhile.

While it seemed they could do better heading for open water, they kept to the ice and kept battling it.

Their struggles were taking a toll on 'em.

After another 75 yards they finally made it to shore.

Found this butterfly flittin' around. I waited, hoping he'd rest next to some snow, but it wasn't to be.

And finally, had these goldeneyes do a passover next to the Shagawa River.

I love the first little guy--perfect opportunity shot. I was so hoping as I scanned down, that you hadn't posted a series with an unfortunate ending, or left before the results were in. I kept wanting to ask you to DO something, please!!! Though I realize your options are limited to none. Way to put some suspense into a series!

Birdsong,

I've seen this scenario played out before and it's my experience that it's best to let the deer handle it themselves. If you try to approach them they tend to struggle harder and wear out faster. You'd think that you could chase them towards shore but there's no guarantee that's the direction they'll head in. Back when I was growing up, had this happen on the lake with a six point buck. Called the DNR and they came to drag a boat across the ice to try a rescue. They fell in, the deer panicked and played itself out. They finally shot it as it lay gasping on the ice. It's a sad reality, but this time had a happy ending.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
