Good starting out carry gun?

Hi guys i will be turning 21 in April. I am taking my carry class in 2 weeks what is a good starting out carry gun. I don't have a of money but for starter carry gun i was thinking about a kel tech in a .380? what do you guys think?

My freinds carry bersa .380's and like them,another freind carrys the kel-tech 9mm and likes it, I carry the Springfeild XD .40s&w and love it great shooter and very simple to take down and clean.

If you can test out a Keltec .380 prior to buying, I would suggest you do so.

They are great little beaters, but I noticed that the narrow grip really tore into the "web" between my thumb and forefinger. Try and shoot a couple of different guns and find the one that feels right for you.

well i saw that bersa today in a .380 and I fell in love with it. and at $325 I can handle that. I would love to get an XD but they are just too much right now. I will try to get out and shoot the kel tech and the bersa

Sig makes a good .380 if you are tied to the caliber.

Fwiw I would try to stear you away from it and more into the 9mm. Something like a Kahr in a similar size. Or mabe a PPK.

I carry a Taurus ultralight 5 shot revolver in .38 cal. It is hammerless, and 12 oz unloaded (but of course it's loaded when I carry). I love this light little gun.

My bud has a Kel-tec and it's a nice gun.

In my opinion, if it's not light and small, it's not a treat to carry. I say think small and light.

For $325 you can find a lot better options then a .380 Bersa

Just get what feels right for you. Think about what you are carrying it for and what you would do with it.

Some carry to protect others just as much as themselves.

Others carry for personal protection.

Ask yourself what you are capable of and what you would CONFIDENTLY be able to do under stress..

use the answers to those questions to help you decide what kind of "carry" gun you should get.

A gun, when in the right hands, is something that can save your life or save someone elses life....

Nothing in that makes me question a price... Id hate to get a gun just based on price and find myself in a situation where I wished I had spent the extra $$

I read the whole thing that you wrote. very important info!! but what other guns are out there for this price range? i am on a tight budget. I am looking to protech myself along with other too. I have a short stubby fingers and that bersa fits right in my hand and it feels good. I am sure after a some shooting I will be a good shot with this gun because its small and it fits my hand. This bersa is a 3 dot sights that are really easy to line up.

The most important aspect to a handgun is how it feels in your HAND. Accuracy comes from a having a comfortable feel with the weapon and of course... practice.

Start out shooting targets while standing or kneeling.

Then progress to putting yourself under more stress and practice practice practice.

My personal choice are the Kel Tecs. I have both the P3AT.380

and the P-11 9MM. I love them. They are a nice size for everyday carry and the .380 spends everyday in my back pocket. Whatever brand you choose I feel it should be a "double action only" type. This eliminates any external safety levers that you would have to deal with in a panic situation. All you do is pull it and start squeezing. (The "safety" is the stiff trigger pull). Remember that these light weight carry guns kick pretty good and aren't the most enjoyable to shoot at first. You will get used to it because you be practicing alot, right? Also, the Kel Tecs are made in this country, I think Bersas are made somewhere in South America. If you would like more info on the Kel Tecs, google it and you will find a Kel Tec owners HSOforum that has some great info. Hope this helps.

Any one have experience with the new Ruger LCP .380? It looks pretty comparable to the Bersa's and Kel-Tec's .380

Last year I went into a local gunshop to find the LCP. The guy working there said they didn't have any in stock but the Kel Tec is the same gun. He went on to tell me that Kel Tec never copyrighted the design of the P3AT so Ruger copied it.

I have heard the the same thing but i think the kel tech or the ruger has a slide lock and the other dont. but I am not sure

I see you say you don't have much money but when you do look at the sub compact XD .40 or the new XDM .40. I have a glock 22 but I will be buying the XD soon for my carry gun.

The Ruger and the Keltech are virtually the same gun, although I like the look and the feel of the Ruger better. I've had one buddy who has had to send in his Keltech in for repairs 3 times, once for a cracked frame.

I'm actually looking at buying the LCP as a summer carry gun. Found it on the web for $280 last night. $300 if you want the Crimson laser grip.

If you really want the start out gun go find a used ruger or s&w 357 revolver you will not ever need to up grade I find myself strapping on my ruger security six more ofter than my XD because it carries so well and it will not fail.

i carry my XD 357sig its the one that fits the best and more acuate with.
