I will be getting a new musky reel pretty soon. I am leaning toward the Daiwa Luna 300 but wanted to see what you guys think about the reel or if there is another reel I should consider. Thanks

llee873, I would suggest looking at the other reel posts. The Luna is not getting that many good comments. I think a lot have been breaking down. The Abu's have also been blasted (except the unproven Toro). So far the Shimano's have been the most consistently suggested. If you are looking in the same price range as the Luna, I would say the Calcutta B would be the way to go. I am a lefty so I cannot buy that reel.

Anti-Reverse went out on mine two weeks after I bought it, traded it back in for a Shimano TE at Thorne Bros, no questions asked, paying the difference was worth it.Solid reel the TE!

Reels are a tough question when it come to getting many anglers opinions on them.

A lot depends on how much use they get and how well they are maintained by the owner. A guy that only fishes abou 10 times a year, might have a much different opinion than the guy that fishes 150 days a year.

Type of use also makes a huge difference in how well the reel performs. Judging a reel that breaks down after tossing DBl 10's all the time, is a tough call. Dbl 10's have destroyed a lot of great reels that probably would have lasted for many years, under different circumstances.

The ABu debate is a perfect example of this. Abu's are a great low budget reel, that in the right circumstances, will last for years. Use them for pulling heavy blade baits and they will more than likely be a disapointment. Does that make them a bad reel, I don't think so. All it means is that they are a bad choice for a rod you plan to cast Dbl10's on. So always keep that in mind when you go to buy a reel.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I am planning on fishing 40-50 times this season. I wish it was more but the cabin is in northern WI and can only fish there on weekends. Whatever reel I decide to go with I think I will pair it will Musky Innovations Bulldawg rod. It will either be a 8' MH or a 8'6" H. I cast anything from small spinner baits to bulldawgs and DCC.

I have two Lunas, a Calcutta 400TE and a 400B. I like the 400TE more than the Luna. I like the Luna more than the 400B. I've had all of them for three years or more and they've taken a lot of abuse. Haven't had any problems with the Luna, had some issues with the 400B, though it was the first one I bought and has suffered the most abuse. They're all solid reels.
