Stick in Mud
As a fairly inexperienced largemouth angler, I enjoy the "tip of the week" thread. I get to learn things from those of you (almost all of you, it seems) who know more than I. I'm curious, however, if anyone would be interested in posting lake maps (you can leave the name of the lake off, of course) and then pointing out the various locations on the map that seem to offer the best chances of catching largemouth. One of the things I need to learn how to do on lakes is to eliminate unproductive water and focus on places that offer the best chances for catching fish. I can't think of a better way to do this (besides fishing, of course) than having experienced anglers point out productive and unproductive locations and then explain why certain areas seem better than others.Anyone interested? MinnesotaBoatman
SledNeck, Hypothetically, if you were fishing a shallow weedy lake with lots of structure, wind 10 – 20 mph from the WNW and possible cold front, where would you target large and small mouth bass? I’ve enclosed a satellite photo of this imaginary lake. I’m sure you could visualize such a setting.
SledNeck
Underwater rocks coming out from points and islands. Id throw plastics and let the water carry them into the rocks and id just keep lifting it off the bottom and letting it sink. As long as the water is moving and youre in the wind, the fish will be there.Later in the year when the weeds come in, Id throw jigs 6" from shore and swim them fast back to the boat, on the bays and points where the wind is blowing in. Dont forget to hit the structure. X-raps can work early in the year. Senkos and spinnerbaits (jerked and let fall or reeled slow) around deadheads. MinnesotaBoatman
SledNeck,The northern Minnesota bass opener is just ten weeks from today on this hypothetical lake. I hope the ice melts by then. If I make it there for the opener, I'll try your advice. If I'm lucky, I'll get a few photos that look like some of your fish. Of course I'll probably be smiling. I saw some big fish today.... but they were in the tank at Cabelas. I took the kids there and told them it was the Rogers Zoo.
