Our dryer is only years old.. It now makes a TERRRIBLE schreech when its running..... Could this be a bearing???? At first I thought it could be the belt but it doesn't really sound like a belt.... We have nothing but problems with this certain brand... I will not mention it here.... We bought our washer at the same time and I would bet about once a year the service guy has to come out... I am sick of paying $80 just to come and look at it.... Anybody with thoughts?? It still has heat and spins!! "Run her till she breaks then take the slege hammer to it." That is how fustrated I am with this brand of [PoorWordUsage]!!!!!!!!!

Our dryer was doing the same thing a couple years ago and I was ready to replace it. High pitch squeal that sounded just like a bearing going out. I spent a few minutes looking it over and found a coin wedged in the back part where the housing and turning part meet. It was barely visible with some felt type brushes that cover up the joint covering up the coin for the most part. I pulled it out and it was fine. Just a thought to check.

My Maytag did that last year too, but mine is 15 years old. There are 2 idler wheels that the drum rides on that I had to replace. They are about $20 a piece. Only 1 was bad, but I replaced both as long as I had it apart. You have to take the whole dryer apart to get at them. It took me about 45 min to do it, but it isn't that hard if you are mechanically inclined.

Check the easy stuff first, but that was my experience.

King,

Spearchucker is right on target with what's wrong. Most of the time 1 of the rollers is bad, but like he did, just replace them both and save yourself a future headache. Oil the roller shafts real well (any type of oil works) and put on new rollers. Should fix problem. Good Luck. If you have any questions about getting it apart, let me know. I should be able to walk you through that.

Do that google on your rig and get the owners manual so you can get a look at what you're trying to get at before you start tearing into things. It may even have some clues on how to open it up. I can tell you that using a wunderbar isn't necessarily the best method, and those little plastic snap jobberdos seem incredibly expensive for what you get.

Spearchucker is right on with the wheels. My old neighbor owns an appliance & repair shop and helped me fix mine. they are easy to do, in less than an hour.

I only replaced the one, as he said that for some unknown reason one will go out 3 times before the other one does.

Make sure to vacuum up any lint inside the dryer before you put it back together, mine was FULL!! (fire hazard). He said its a good idea once a year to take the outside cover off and clean everything out.

I have ordered parts from Home Depot online as they carry replacement parts for almost any appliance. You just plug in models and a tutorial walks you through it. I'd prefer to order them from a local mom and pop outlet, but it's pretty darn convenient.

There is either Dey Appliance or Sundberg Appliance in the metro. Depending on where you are. They have a couple locations around town. They will have the parts you need.

I looked online at a picture of a legacy and it's the Amana style dryer.

To take apart:

Remove 2 screws from bottom panel and remove panel

Remove 2 screws holding remaining front panel on, tilt bottom outwards and top clips will release. Unhook wires, remember what color goes where.

Remove 4 screws holding shroud in front of drum

Reach under right side of drum above blower wheel housing and unhook belt

Remove 2 screws holding top on

Remove drum

Rollers will be in back

Replace rollers and oil well. Also oil wheel that keeps tension on belt

Reassemble and use until it breaks again, then repeat process

(All screws are 5/16)

Good Luck
