Storing propane tanks?

Should store your propane tanks full? or empty? or doesn't it matter?

My two 11# tanks are empty right now. I was wondering if I should get them filled before putting them away for the year.

dont see anyreason why they would need to be full... i always just leave them as they are... full, empty half full... even 20/32 full is fine by me

If you're storing them inside I would store them empty. Pressure could build up if they are full and they could vent if inside in a warm area.

Please note that storing cylinders indoors would be ill advised regardless if they were full or empty.

Mine are never stored I grill all summer long.

Summer is for grilling, swimming, fishing and drinking.

Sometimes simultaneously.

When I store my scuba tanks, they have at least 500psi in them to prevent moisture build up in them.

Would this concept be the same with the storing of LP tanks as well? Store them full to prevent moisture build up?

There should never be any moisture in a propane tank. Thats what purging will prevent

Mine all always full, The grill runs quite a bit in the summer.

i leave mine with whatever amount they have in it, and they get used on the grill in the summer (and winter)

i leave them to bad my dad needs them in the summer for grillin he'll probably think that they were leaky tanks hehe

just dont leave the valves open a little pressure is always good to leave in them as for moisture use a fiberglas tank I have an 11 lb fiberglass sweet and lite! if moisture got it prob wouldnt affect it saving now for a 20 lb fiberglass tank best way to go you know when your gonna run out!

I happened to fill my 4lb. tank once late in the spring and then never got opportunity to use it again the rest of the year. One rather warm day that summer I walked past and could smell that distinctive odor added to LP gas and sure enough the valve was venting. It was actually discharging a rather significant amount.

Filling the tank when the weather is cold and then letting it sit for the summer to heat up may not be the best idea. From my experience I prefer not to have them full.

it really shouldnt happen if they fill by weight and then there is the reason for new opd valve preventing in filling over 80%

Do not store them indoors, all propane tanks have a buit in pressure relife valve and when they warm up the pressure builds up and if it reaches the preset pressure they will vent of some gas. So store them out doors and up right.

I used to operate a flame cutting machine that used propane, I would get between 5 and 10 100gal tanks a week. If they need to vent....they WILL it doesn't matter if they are inside or out. You WILL know when they vent, if you are within 50 or 60 ft you will hear it and there is always the smell.
