30-06 or 30-30?

Terminal Ballistics 101

Sectional density: a ratio of bullet weight/cross-sectional area

2 different bullets having similar construction, similar sectional density and similar velocity will have similar penetration regardless of weight, caliber, or case size.

Pooh,

I say the 30-06 is more powerful because:

Power = Work/Time
KEi + PEi + Work = KEf + PEf

Potential Energy (PEi and PEf) can be considered zero for the bullet. KEi is kinetic energy initial of the object being struck by the bullet (because the work is being done to the object). KEi is initially zero. KEf is the kinetic energy that has been delivered to the object being struck by the bullet. It is safe to assume for comparison purposes that the bullet transfers all energy to the object being struck.

Now, go back above and look at the KE of the 30-06 and compare it to the KE of the .270 at any distance. The 30-06 has a greater amount of KE, which means the work done to the object is greater, Time can safely be considered a constant, so Power is greater for the 30-06.

Basically, the 30-06 delivers more KE to the object than does the 270.

You picked out 180 grain. The 30-06 will deliver that bullet with more speed thus more KE than the 270. Even look above where nuts has posted the comparison where 270 is shooting a bullet more suited to the caliber, the KE is still greater for the 30-06.

The .270 is a fine round for elk, I'd never dispute that.

The WSM is a whole other animal, I'm not talking about that.

130 grain tend to be about as good a load for a .270 as you'll find, in terms of S/D. And that Boat-tailed 130g. Sierra GameKing is an amazing bullet at both short and long range, though no bullet is an expert at both.

Both guns are great. It largely depends on which dog is in your kennel, and wether or not it will hunt.

I'm pretty sure my Sako .270 is better than my Pump 30.06..........

paceman
my buddy used to go out to wyoming to hunt mullies and thats what he used was the '06 with a 130 grain bullet. the 2 he shot the closest was 300 yards. i dont think you have a problem with the yardage, he seems to love that gun with that bullet.

Just remember, it ain't the gun that doesn't shoot straight............A gun will always shoot straight.

If you are looking into long range shooting, I can say say is practice, practice, practice.........etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc............

I will shoot about 200 rounds of 22 ammo before I sight in any gun, just to get the "breath and squeeze" down.......

As for what calibers, I highly recommend some of the new short magnums. Also, don't be afraid of the 300wsm or even 300mag. You can get bullet size in all sizes that you will ever need, from antelope to moose........

Most of these calibers are honestly a horse a piece. Yes, there are small differences, but nothing too drastic.........

Why do I say this, I have documented proof of taking down 15" x 25" targets with a .308 from 400, 450, 500, 550, 600, 650, 700, 750, & 800 meters with open sites...........

Don't worry too much of how much power or speed a bullet has, if you can't hit what you are aiming at..........

Personally I think both guns have a good place in Mn hunting.
I like a 30-30 for stalking and drives
30-06 for stand hunting (with a good 3x9x38 scope)
I like to use 180gr for the ability to cut some brush and reduce the wingers...
I hunt Wyoming too and I use a 338 mag there.

Good post. Right after I moved to SD, I asked 10 guys what caliber deer rifle I should get, and I got 10 different answers. The best answer I got was "It does not matter which rifle you choose, as long as your comfortable with it and know how it shoots".
I bought a Tikka .300 Win Mag. Yes, I know it's a cannon for deer, but it knocks them down in a hurry! Some guys say these big guns bust up hind quarters and ruin meat. Well, if you hit a deer with a 22-250, your still gonna lose meat.

Wow, A lot of Opinions have been listed since I was on VK.

1) The 270 is NOT faster then a 06!
Do not even answer if you do not reload...
2) Shot placement is EVERYTHING!
3) The Short's are a new thing/trend and have there place (next) to every other round.
4) I have shot deer between 5 meter's/yards and 536 yards (not in MN). I ONLY have shot the longer distances because of the possiblity of making the shot was there and I have tipped Rams freehand @ 500 meters.
5) As mentioned each rifle cart. as a bullet weight which is optimum for the performance of that caliber.
6) Shoot what you want! Have fun. Shoot until you can hit every time! Then it will not matter if it's a .243 or .460 Weatherby.

P.S. If there is someone that is looking at a ballistics chart and the .270 has AN bullet that travels faster then a 30-06
- the 55gr(spritzer) 30-06 goes about 5000 fps!

Apples to Apples to compare... always.

Hope all do well this season!

OK, you can have your soap box back now...
