I do it just because my girlfriend complains about bones if I don't. There is a small strip of bones there, I used to just leave then in on walleye and northern and then break the fillet at the lateral line once cooked exposing all of the bones, which can then be pulled out.

Whats the best way to clean smallmouth? I actually saw that question asked on an Iowa HSOforum. Thats when I knew I didnt belong. I dont bother with the belly meat. I found that trying to get it usually just means you include the epipleural bones into the filet so it wasnt worth it. Ive seen hundreds of fish cleaned with an electric. I`ve never seen one I couldnt have done better with my old Buck filet knife. Although, when you can drop them off at the bait shop and come back to get filets, its hard to argue with that. Makes it easy to accept a little damage, lol.
