Lowrance XOG or H20

Lure Lightning

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a unit that I can use on the water and in the woods. The XOG is on sale right now for $150 was $300 that is the only reason I am looking into it and it has the bonus of use in vehicle.

I would like to know if the color or greyscale for the H20 is easier to see in sunlight as well. Thanks

The XOG works well in the sunlight. Just as good as the color or greyscale H2O. It won't be as durable as the other two and isn't waterproof. So, if you drop it in some slush it might be toast. Plus, when the battery dies you can't just pop in some AA's like the H20's since it has it's own battery. It doesn't do street names like the newer Garmins, which is something that I like to have. I do like the larger screen and the ability to use the touch to move around with. The touch screen might be an issue if you like to leave your GPS on while you hole hop since it might get goofed up while in your jacket by the little touches from your jacket movement (I'm guessing).

Other than all the above, I think it's a pretty good unit for the price.

I'd go against the XOG if you're taking it in the boat. Battery life is terrible, and the screen becomes difficult to use in the cold or in the rain. The Expedition C would be my choice followed by the H20 C. These units aren't exactly easy on batteries either, but still much better than the XOG. Both easy to use, the color is definitely a bonus and isn't as difficult to see in the sun as people think. As a matter of fact, I've never had any problems, day or night, sun or clouds. There is a reason the XOG is on sale, and I personally would shy away from it.

I was reading about the XOG versus the H20, the xog has internal rechargable batteries that have an average life of 2 hours, plus I think you can get a plug in for the car. The H20 runs on 3 AAA batteries plus comes with the car plug in. I chose the H20C for that reason, plus a local store has them priced at $229.00 for the color. I didn't know I would have to have a college degree to understand the manual though! The H20 is supposed to be waterproof, the XOG is listed as water resistant.

XOG comes with a car charger and USB charger.

Get what you want and spend what you want. I am not going to argue with the H2O people grin.

All I can say is now I have had my XOG snowed on, wet and in sub zero temps and it works like a charm. It is going in my boat next summer for sure.

Used it in the car this last week and weekend and in the parks of St. Paul. When you are not looking at it or using it, shut it off wink. When you go up to your car and review what you want, throw the car charge on it. It has not gone dead on me yet.

How many H2O guys and gals let the H2O run on the batteries the whole time while out fishing? Maybe I learned from my Garmin 12, but I get the spot and shut if off, unless plugged in.

Keep in mind the H2O has WAAS and the XOG does not. You will get more accurate positioning with the H2O. I have the H2O C and when it is locked in with WAAS I usually get estimated position error within 20 feet or less. If WAAS is not locked in it is 30-70 feet. I was looking at the XOG and did not get it for this reason.

I have the xog and I can see street names in the city? Out in the backwoods not sure yet. But the unit is great if you are looking for car gps and also being able to use the chips. I would not recommend this unit either if using on the open water. Overall cheap, color, and easy to read instructions. I personally recommend it for 150 bucks.

I will let others talk about WAAS, the chip set of the XOG verses the H2o (WAAS enabled or not) and 12 channels verses 16 channels.

The XOG has gotten me to the same holes I drilled weeks after I drilled them on ML with the Lakemaster chip.

Good luck on what you do buy LL! smile

My thought is that there isn't all that much value to the WAAS. If you think about it, those GPSs have to be pretty darn accurate for road navigation. I know when it reads out the measurements for distance to turn, it is spot on '0' when you are in the intersection. That is good enough for me. Fish don't just stack up under one hole.

I think battery life is biggest potential downside to the XOG, if you can get around that then the XOG is a great way to go, with some really neat cross-over functionality.

But if you're looking for a unit for woods and water, and presumably longer battery life (iFinders use 2 AA batteries) then the H2Oc would be a better way to go.

If I was buying a GPS I would definately go with the color screen.

I've got both those units (and more) at Pro Fishing Supply Handheld GPS. The XOG is $150 and the H2Oc is $235, and shipping is FREE.

Lambjm...

where'd you find it for $229? I got mine at the Big C store and they matched FF's price of $249...

$229 is a great price on the color version....

L&M Fleet in Grand Rapids, I also got the H20C because I had been waiting for the B&W from Bass Pro but they have been on back order for the last month and I wanted to take it with this weekend. So I ponied up the extra bucks locally for the H20C as they didn't have the XOG there.

With the H20C (not sure about the XOG) you can use position averaging to lower your estimated error range even farther. I've had it down to 10-11 feet many times, which is HUGE if you don't want to waste time punching needless holes in the ice!

The Lakemaster chip I have for the H20C is also flippin' awesome! The level of detail it shows, especially on lakes like Big Winnie, is just unreal.

You can now get the H20C for $229 pretty much anywhere, even if they have it advertised higher. I've not used the XOG, but all I can say is that I am madly in love with my H20C. My wife is getting jealous smile

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
