First how big and secound how long should it take.

I got a 26 inch 6 pound rainbow that has been at the tax about 8 months. The reason I got it mounted is that I got it out of a really small lake and it seemed like a nice fish.Is a 26 inch 6 lbs trout to small to mount? How long should I wait to call and see if its ready?

If it's a good representation of it's species and the taxidermist does a good job just about any fish can make a beautiful mount. Now a 26" rainbow is a VERY nice trout. Outside of Alaska and the great lakes you will be hard pressed to catch a fish that nice. I might fall out of the boat if I caught one that big on some of the small lakes I fish!

I've got a fat sunny at the tax right now since July! I called him in early December and he told me that he would call when the fish is done! I think I can wait, don't want to push a artist....

A 26" bow is very nice, wherever you caught him. Way to go!

As for the taxidermy, most good ones are very busy and a year is not out of the ordinary for a wait time. That said, the squeeky wheel gets the grease. You could probably get it sooner if you bugged him a bit. Just don't overdo it and tick him off.

In my books, any fish that is memorable to you and that you like can be mounted. It is entirely personal choice. I've mounted stream caught browns that were 22" and beautiful colors but it was one of the largest browns that I had caught out of that river since I was a kid. It is on the smaller side for browns but I'm really glad that I did. My Dad sold the cabin a year later (its almost impossible to get in that stretch of river from the public land) and I moved out of MI shortly after Dad sold the cabin. It is always a nice reminder of the times spent there and on that river.

It doesn't hurt to call and get an update as to when it will be completed.

How long did he say it would take when you brought it to him.

They get calls like that all the time.

I don't know? Thats the thing. I can't remember how long he said it would take. He did say he would call when its done. I thought he said it would take 8-12 months but I'm not sure.I just don't want to bother him cuz I'm sure he gets alot of calls like that. Probably hard to get anything done if he's always on the phone. I'm trying to post a pic of it now. I'll try get it up here today.

its been a while since i had a fish mounted but i know my taxidermist usually waits until he has X amount of a certain species or a season is over to do a certain species. think it is just more efficient for him. 8-12 months sounds about the norm for the one i use, and he does a great job (but it can seem like an eternity when you want to see it first hand!)

I only once didn't contact the taxidermist every now and then. Turned out it is the one time I never got my 20+" smallmouth back. When I first moved to Minnesota, I caught a bunch of nice rainbows on Bass Lake in Maplewood State Park. Ol' Brenna in Pelican said any rainbow over 20" was worth mounting if caught around here. My guy in Vergas did a nice job on this one.

I took a fat 16" Brown in last July from a stream that I have been fishing since I was a kid and never caught any Browns out of it and it won't cost an arm and a leg to get it mounted, either. Most of my fish mounts have taken a year to get back but if the guy is good you can bet there will be a wait...

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
