Fixing a Portable

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, first post here....

I just got a free portable from my uncle because he doesn't use it anymore and after I got it home and set it up in my garage, I found out that the mice had gotten to it. The damage isn't too bad, all the holes are on one side. We have a permanent house, but I've wanted a portable so we could try out some different lakes and I can't afford to buy a new one, so if I could fix this one, that would be great. Any suggestions are appreciated... thanks guys.

I called canvascraft one day and got a patch kit for my eskimo. It cost 1/2 of what Eskimo wanted for it, and it was like 10x the amount of fabric. Eskimo only offers a 12 inch square kit and they charge an arm and a leg for it.

Tell the friendly lady on the phone that you're looking to patch and ice house and you need color XYZ of fabric and some "tear mender" glue.

I did some patchwork on one of my portables that my Grandpa built 30 or 40 years ago. The material on it canvas and i think it may actually been squirells that got to mine. Anyway i went to either J**nne F@br*cs or Mic**als and bought patching material there. Lesss than $10 and I was on my way. Still works good two years later.

I had to patch my portable last season. Mine is made with a heavy black canvas. I got some canvas from a local fabric store and got the gorilla glue to glue it into place. Follow the directions on the glue and it should work out great. My patch hasn't come off yet. Inexpensive repair.

Timely subject. I nicked my northland with the nils and I noticed 2 hours later two slices in it. Man those bits are sharp hardly touched the canvas. I'll have to call canvas craft and and get some patches.

Is that tear mender glue in a blue bottle with a red cap if its the same stuff that I'm thinking of that stuff is awesome. I believe it is called Tear Mender

thanks for all the advice... i think i'll go the duct tape route for now. when i do patch it up with canvas this spring/summer, should i just put a patch on the outside, or should i put patches on the inside and outside?

The glue I got was this:

I had a gaping hole from a heater, and I patched it only on the inside, and it seems to be holding up quite well. Had it patched throughout all of last year and I haven't seen any signs that the patch is coming loose yet this year, so going on 2 years.

Another option you may want to consider is getting some iron-on patch material from someplace that sells craft or sewing supplies. I used some on a Frabill shelter I had and it worked great. Just be careful with the heat so you don't scorch your shelter. If you need window material, many also sell relatively clear flex plastic sheeting that is intended to be used as table covers. Used that to patch a window and worked great as well.

the window is fine, the only part that the mice chewed on was the back wall, there is about a 3 foot by 3 foot area towards the bottom that has a bunch of holes. i'm not sure what kind it is, my uncle had gotten it a few years back and never really used it and then the mice got to it.

Thats the stuff. I'll use that stuff on my jeans if I get blow out in the crotch and holds up great. Better thn sewing.

AANDERUD-----At what retail outlet did you get the "tear mender"?

The people at canvascraft threw it in when I ordered a patch. They also did not skimp on the patch, I think I must have gotten 20 square feet...like 2' x 10'.

I think you could probably find it at Mills, if not it's definitely on the 'net.

What would you guys recomend for a patch on the blue tarp material? I have and older suitcase portable, don't know the mfg, and the squirels got to it. Has anyone tried tarp tape? Any other suggestions? One of the hole is about 12"x6" and right in the corner where the support pole goes.
