Ice Fishing storage bag for rods/reels

KJB

Recommended Posts

I am looking for advice on a new rod/reel storage bag. My parameters-

1. I need one long enough for 36" rods to be stored

2. I want one with a tube insert for protection, not a soft side nor a "bow

case" type

3. It needs to have enough room in the reel section to easily hold three reels.

I have checked a number of places and can find what I am looking for but either not in a long enough case or not big enough reel pouch just can not find both together. The Thorne Bros, was 42" and was perfect length except for the issues listed. I did see a Plano that was long enough but it's reel section was not nearly big enough. Gander Mt. has great reel storage but not long enough. Please help!!!!

You may have a tough time finding one with what you are asking for.

I do have a Otter hard sided one that I keep all of my laker rods in. Its approx 40-42 inches long. All foam inside but I would guess you could add tubes if you wished to do so. The Otter box is one tough case and if you break a rod in it, you must have drove over it with your truck.

The Ready Rig bag is another but not long enough.

I've got an older Lakewood Ice Pole Caddie that I can fit 8 setups inside. It fits 36" rods and is soft sided. I slide each rod inside a golf club tube to keep them separated inside the case. Newer Lakewoods have foam inside like the Otter Case that can be removed.

I have case similar to the TB rod case w/the hard tube (Beckman). This style case should fit three combo's easily. When inserting the poles, the reels sit in the fat section staggered. STRONGLY recommend using rod slicks, otherwise the guides/line will snag/tangle when putting rods in/out.

ANYONE know who stocks Stone Legacy Revolution rod/tackle case in the metro area? Can't seem to find any except on their HSOforum. Past years guys on this site spoke highly of it, and want to take a closer look before buying.

KGB,

Find anything yet?

I measured my Croxton case today. I bet you could fit 6 - 36 inch rods with reels in there if you take out the divider at the bottom where the depthfinder/tacklebag is meant to go. We call them our 'golf' bags.

Only thing is, you would have to install your own tubes in the upper part for your blanks.

I think you might have to customize just about anything to get exactly what you want.

Wanderer,

No, I have not. The St. Croix is too short (34"), the Stone Legacy is too short (34") but does have on at 36"- but it is more like the soft side and too bulky. I need a tube style to keep packing it in the sled easy and efficient. The bigger cases just take up too much room. I am thinking I may just have a heavy duty zipper put on my TB case and then cut out the inside of the side storage compartment, thus making more room in the pouch area to hold reals. I will just re-glue the felt padding to the inside of the storage compartment and bang! I have what I am looking for. I think it will work! Otherwise, for $20, just keep buying and breaking the TB cases! Seems really strange no one makes a decent bag for longer ice rods?

What I use is soft sided rifle cases. I can fit 3 rods per case, all I have to do is loosen the handle so it lays down. I have 2 cases and they take hardly any room in the porty. Works great for me. I also have 2 rods that are 36" long and fit with room to spare.

I have the bag fro thorne brothers. I have two rods that are 36". That go on one side. Then I have three panfish rods that go in the other side. I have a power noodle, 2 walleye sweetheart, perch sweetheart?, and a jason mitchell panfishrod. I just break down the handles of the reels and everything fits in fine. I carry mine in the portable sled all the time with no problem. haven't broken a rod yet. and wouldn't want to with the ones I have.

So it seems to me like you might be a little hard on the use of the bag or a little picky. just giving you a hard time.

really i like my bag from thorne bothers. i also keep all of my tackle and gps stuff and other gear in the aide pockets. works good for me.

Somehow, my post got deleted from yesterday, I think I know why, but will again post that I found what I was looking for. There is a bag called the Xscape from Cabexx's that is not touted as for ice fishing, but it is exactly what I am looking for. It has a 44" tube, a very large reel section and you can use velcro on the inside to secure and section off what you need- or not is you so choose. Easily hold three rods and reels and yet not nearly as cumbersome as a bag style. My nephew looked it over good in person and gave it a thumbs up. I ordered it yesterday- plus it is on sale if you look on line. Sure hope this does not violate any posting policies!

KJB....

I was going to mention this bag(Xscape), it's heavy duty. But it looks like you found it. I recieved it as part of a 15yr gift package at work, sure beats a gold watch. I haven't decided if it's going to see the ice, or just be my summer BWCA setup (I can fit 3 two-piece rods in there plus reels and tackle). It should work perfect for what you need.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
