crappie minnows

What is the best way to hook a minnow for crappies? jig heads, normal hook,(size) or wax worm jig? any advise will be helpful

I hook mine right in the middle of the back on a regular hook. A tru-turn hook works well.

watch an tape on ice fishing by the In-fisherman staff while back. they recommended to hook the minnow under the dorsal fin pointing forward if using a plain hook. And if using a jig run the hook thru the top of the head first and come out under the mouth again pointing forward. They claimed that a crappie will always grap a minnow head first, thus hook pointing forward increases your chances of better hook ups.

I usually go under the dorsal fin as well. I think you get the best action verticle jiggin' that way.

Depends on the mood of the fish, try different ways while out fishing and you may find the best bite of the day.

Small bare hook through back, stay in the dark area and your minnow will live. Use a small hook so that you can hook them in the right spot and it wont weight them down so they can swim around more. Only way to go in my opinion if u gunna use em.

Here's a good tip...I've been hooking them through the eyeballs. They cant feel it seems like they dont know its even there. Try it and you'll see it works well.

As DD said, many different ways will work. Thread em on a collarless jig head as you would a plastic grub in the summer, that will work too. There are a bunch of different ways. Take just the head and put it on a jiggin spoon. Thread the tail on a horizontal jig like a fat boy. Try things til it works.

That being said, the only time I really use minnows is lake of the woods for walleyes anymore. Everything else is plastics for the most part.

I switch off either through the back, or right in front of the tail. I actually prefer the tail, they tend to get more action swimming that way

I do the same thing at times. It blinds em, but I lead em where they need to go afterwards.

I hook them right behind the dorsal fin or right under it. The fish seem to live along time with this setup and it allows for them to swim freely

I hook 'em in the butt - right up the wazoo, turn the hook just a smidge, and exit so that the hook lays right along side their belly - which is light colored just like the hook. Generally I fish with #10 Fairy Jigs or #10 Propellors - may sound corny, but it works for me - fish stays alive, plenty of movement, and a lot less bait stealing.
