Mille Lacs New Years Update

Recommended Posts

We hit the lake at around 2PM, the "old grouch" and I arrived first. Very cold Weds, -20 when we left on Weds morn. Got out all our fishing gear and I got the lines down right away, while the "old grouch" decided to lay back and rest. Char and Hope arrived in the late afternoon along with Teresa, her 2 boys, and Shelly! We had a great time partying and bringing in the New Year, Teresa's shack had an Aqua Vu camera and we spent most of the night watching all the fish swimming around on the bottom. Teresa's boys are quite the charmers and a hoot to be around. Can't divulge all the details, cause ya know what goes on at Mille Lacs stays at Mille Lacs. Thursday was quite the day, the wind was blowing gale force all day and it was brutal. Long story short, I fell flat on my back on the ice Thursday night, got drifted in at Teresa's shack, got stuck in the snow, Char and hubby dug us out, Char's hubby got stuck trying to blast through our driveway so we could get back to our shack, then Char pulled him out with her jeep after more shoveling. Had to go get Paul to plow to our shack so we could get back in..................whew! All in all I did have a fun time, but never caught a fish, never had a bite!!! We could see them on the camera, could see them on the vexilar, could not get them to hit. Of course we also saw what looked like a bazillion little creatures swimming around down there that the perch and walleyes seemed to be gorging themselves on. I know it is not the dead sea, cause we could see them, just couldn't catch them. Missed ya Lisa and Tami!!!!

I have to say it was a fun time. The boys were entertaining and I had a great time. Thanks Char and hubby for letting me crash with you. I did have a few nibbles but no fish, I could not believe the cold and wind but hey with flatness as far as you can see it can be expected. Paul from Appledorns was great. Thank you gals and hubby's for a great weekend, I send or post the photo's soon.

Hope

Hey it was great to see all of you and meet the husbands. As usual I had a great time with all of you and can't wait to do it again...I wish I could be there next weekend but no way can I get out of work.Hopefully you all will have better luck and keep the cell phones away from the holes...lol

I really hesitated mentioning the phone, I know how I would have felt. Although I have had my phone since 2004 and it is pretty crude by today's standard, so maybe I could use a new one. Was it Simon's pretty white sweater that got a little messy. Did ya get it clean? I was so happy to see Shelly there, she sure is a hoot. I had to stay in all day Sunday as my back was hurting pretty bad, probably not helping by shoveling the latest round of snow off the deck and the ramp. Plus I got the ATV stuck in the yard while plowing, chains and all. I need to dig that out today.

You would have had to been there to actually believe it. Most bizarre thing I have ever seen. Door slammed, phone fell off a shelf next the microwave, bounced off a countertop and plopped down the hole 2 feet away. Down the same hole as the fish camera so we could see it sitting on the bottom.

Hope, I thought you were staying one more night with Char and Don?

This is odd, my dad's name is Don and my step mom's name is Char. It was weird for me to read this post. I am sure they are not the same people, they live in Colorado. Just a funny coincidence I guess.

Bummer about the phone, I have helped fish keys back up before that fell down a hole.

Bob,

I fished Hunters on Saturday afternoon on Flamingo Reef. The roads to the reef weren't as nice as last years due to the snow. We only managed small perch. No keepers. If you want to go off road use a snowmobile. I saw several vehicles getting stuck through out the day. They are keeping the main roads pretty clear though.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
