Decisions - Lowrance 522c or Flasher for ice fishing?

I am in the market for a new depth finder. I had the misfortune of having my gps stolen out of my boat this Fall so I need to replace that and I would also like something for ice fishing as I currently do not have one.

So, do I buy a Lowrance 522c to use for both OR do I get a vexilar, marcum or humminbird? If I get the latter, I would still have to get something for my boat and would likely get a 520 or 522 anyway.

Have any of you used one of these Lowrance models for ice fishing? Tips? Recommendations?

It is a pretty known quantity for me regarding the flashers so I dont need any nuances there, but the graphs would interest me if someone has used them and could share any opinions on that.

Thanks!

you just started a big debate. I have a lowrance ice machine that I use all year, the flasher mode on the lowrance in my opinion is not up to par with other flashers. but the graph mode is top notch, to be able to use it all year is great, I use mine on my kayak in the summer. with the 522 you have even more possibilities with gps and the ability to add lakemasters & navionics chips, wow I just talked myself into upgrading to the 522.

How well does the flasher mode work? I agree, the gps funtions are really why I am leaning toward getting a 522 because I can throw a map chip in it drive to the spot, drill holes and use the flasher or graph to mark fish and view my line. I have wondered how well the flasher actually works.

When you say the graph mode it top notch, are you just referring in general or is that in reference to use during ice fishing?

Does it react decently to the bait? Can you pick up the lure? The fish?

I really dont want to buy two units because I will end up shelling out more money in the end, but I want something that is going to work too.

Thanks for your thoughts.

A point to also consider is the New Lowrance HD units soon to be on the shelf will also have a new HD lower power capability, and may be even a better performer yet on the ice then the 500, 522 and the 520 series was.

If a mapping unit on the ice is your goal, you may wish to research these new 5X HD units first.

I have never used the 522, but my x67c in graph mode works great. I also use the zoom option, with split screen. You can watch for suspended fish coming in, and still watch where your bait is. You can easily see your bait, and fish. What is cool, is watching a fish just below your bait come up and take it while you are watching it happen on the graph. I went with the lowrance, because of the versatility(summer, winter).

I love mine. The ability to have memory incase your looking at something else is a BIG plus.

Thanks JimBuck! I should have dug a little deeper to find that info. Some great information in that thread.

I definitely think I am leaning more heavily to the 522. The new HD models sound intriguing, but timing and price are going to be an issue for me. I am thinking about getting this tomorrow. I can pick up a 522 with the ice package, battery, charger, case, etc AND a summer transducer for under $550.

No problem brother. I purchased mine this spring for full price and I am kicking myself now with some of the prices for this unit out there. I think it's a great piece of equipment. Good luck with your purchase!

We went out with some of the immediate family this past week for Christmas. We had a flahser and I had my ice machine. The newbies could read and understand my unit in graph mode so much easier than the flasher.

It helped them catch fish, which made my life easier.

pljllo, did you try calling Throne Brothers? Either them or Perch Jerker's store has them. Can't go wrong with either of those places.

Chode, I got my 522 working today. Couldn't see my lure with the LX-5 or a buddies Humming bird 35. The Lowrance picked it up much closer to the bottom and only had to guess about 3-5 feet. I'm pretty impress with them. We still need to get out and have you show me some tricks.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
