NEW Note: The Department of Puplic Safety DVS now requires trailers used to haul fish houses or dark houses and encolsed trailers or recreational trailers used for fishing must be registered. see your local Deputy Registrar for trailer registration.

that is what is on page 55 of the Minnesota fishing regulation book. I also heard that you must have them registered by Aug 08and the possiblity of haveing to have electric brakes on cerain size fish houses. that is what the DMV told a buddy of mine who asked about the registration for his house.

I really don't think this is a bad idea. I have seen some houses on the road that were hardly worthy to be hauled on ice roads let alone public roads. I personally have not heard this though. Are the licenses being proposed RV tags, or will a permanent tag be considered?

They are the RV plates. I have the RV plates on my house and the tabs expire yearly in February.

My tabs are based on Gross Weight of 12000lbs My house weighs 4800lbs.

Reg Tax + Filing Fee is $25.50 They did away with the Shelter Liscense and had to supplement that income somehow. Either way for anybody who Ice Fishes the low cost should be of no effect as it is a drop in the bucket compared to our other expenses. Gear/Bait/Etc.

I was told by my local DMV, that I was going to put a commercial license on my fish house. Is that the same as an RV plate? If you look an minnesota's (dot HSOforum), you can find all kinds of info on what has to be on the house, how many lights, brakes, etc. I plan on putting a 6000# suspension system under our house, with brakes. The house is going to be a total 20' in length, we are going to put the brakes in anyway. It will save on my truck brakes and be easier to control. Does anyone know if the DMV is going to need a scale slip, to show the Gross vehicle weight? The DMV did not tell me what I would need at the time of regestration. Give me some accurate info please.

When I went to the license bureau to renew my truck tabs I asked the girl working about having to license my homemade wheelhouse. She gave me a form and told me to fill in "homemade" for manufacturer, "2008" for year it was made, and "fishhouse" for model. Then she told me to write this for the explanation; "I built a wheeled fishhouse and now the state is making me license it". Since it is under 3000 lbs I was able to get the lifetime license. $66.00 later it was a quickly done deal.

Where do you guys weigh them to see what they weigh? I have a small trailer I want to convert into a house this summer. It's 5x8, I want to make it about a foot wider by framing it to put the wheels inside the house. I doubt it will be over 3000 but how do you weigh it to know for sure?

I just wanted to throw out a question playing devils advocate of course.

Now that you have to register wheel houses as trailers, isn't it considered double dipping by the state to have to register the house with the state for transportation registration as well as DNR for housing license?

I'm not complaining, but rather just wondering how this is viewed? I realize one is for the up keep on the roads, and one is upkeep of the lakes.

I know i pay DNR registration on my boat and i Pay transportation dept for my tabs on my boat trailer, but i also dont fish out of my boat trailer.

Just throwing it out there to see what comes back grin.gif

You are not required to have a shelter liscense unless you leave the house unattended. Think of it as you have to have and pay for a driver's liscense and an vehicle liscense.

They dropped the shelter tag requirment and had to make up the revunue somewhere, so they added it on to the big houses which should increase their revunue stream.

who would have ever thought that you would be taking a fish house to an elevator to get it weighed so you could leaglly pull it down the road to go fishing? Kinda Funny. One thing I wish they (the DMV) would crack down on are the guys putting 20 ft boats on 16ft trailers with donut tires--and especially the moron dealers who sell these "packages" to the public that dont know better to lower the price $500. NOt safe or realistic.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
