Poker Faces

I don't know Dark,

I have never seen that before, what movie is it from? It was amusing but I can think of three card scenes right off the get go that I would rank higher than that as best poker game filmed:

The Sting - When Paul Newman cheats better than Robert Shaw with 4 Jacks over 4 Nines

The Cincinnati Kid - When Steve McQueen loses to Edgar G. Robinson

Rounders - When Matt Damon finally beats John Malkovich

Any others out there?

John Wayne was famous for his fondness for playing poker with the cast and crew of his numerous films. While filming the movie Hondo, Wayne won the famous dog star Lassie away from her owner and trainer Rudd Weatherwax in an after-shooting-hours poker game. Wayne, whose nickname of "Duke" came from the name of his childhood dog, graciously gave the world-famous collie back in the morning.

I disagree with Windy- best part of Rounders is when Malkovich beats Damon- the look on Damons face when he sees the pocket aces was priceless, and a face I am sure I have made a few times in my life as a somewhat card player.

Probably my favorite card playing movie is the new Maverick with Mel Gibson. His friend Joseph makes me LMAO everytime I watch that movie.

Come on Zamboni,

When John Malkovich goes crazy and tosses the Oreos. Check, check, check all the time! Then the capper, He Beats Me, Pay the Man His Money! Classic.

Thought of another great poker scene, Stripes with John Candy who is holding a full house and the dork who has nothing and does not know how to play cards. "Come on, bluff me. If it was me I would bet it all, but that's me, I'm an aggresive gambler, Mr. Vegas. Then when the dork bets it all, OK I call, I have a full house and you have a jack high, if you had 4 jacks you would have won! Too Funny.

Windy you truly are "windy". If you have played a ton of cards like I have- when Damon goes broke was almost Oscar worthy. Was almost in tears, just pure devastation.

I am on my way next saturday to Jackpot Junction to play in my second state poker finals- I just hope I don't have that look on my face.

Sadly, only 1 win and about 20 seconds. When I lived in KC, we had the Amateur Poker League. I won probably 30+ times, one night taking 1st and 2nd on the same night. Funny thing is- we averaged about 75+ ppl down there and I did alot better than here with less ppl. You going to state?

What do you guys think of the Bar League tournaments??? The ones that I have been to are a big joke so I stopped going after the fisrt couple. 1/2 the people didn't know how to play and the other half just wanted to goof off and drink. It seemed like alot of [PoorWordUsage].

I prefer a much more organized game like a $125 buy in tourney at the casino or playing $6/$12 or $15/$30 or a spread game like $3-$20. Up here in Walker we have Northern Lights which is verrry soft but they only ever play 3-6 which as anybody knows can be a joke and it's not a real poker game, just a contest to see who can hit the most flops and hold on to the end.

Bar Leagues just seem to be a joke and since nobody ever seems to care, it takes the fun out of it.

Do you guys agree or disagree??? What are the bar leagues that you have played in like?

I’ve never played in any bar league games, but I can see where it might turn into nothing more than a horse race every hand.

I like to play 2-4 when I want to just sit around and [PoorWordUsage] and try to get a bad beat or Aces Cracked (on special nights). I’ve found the only way to come ahead though is to find a loose table and play ULTRA tight……example….out of position A10 off goes in the muck. Then every once in a while raise any two cards on the button. Either you hit, or you can steal it. Contrary to popular belief, you can steal a 2-4 pot from time to time.

If I want to make some money though, I prefer a spread game like 2-10.

10,000,

I play in many 3-6 games and if you play correct you can do pretty well, trapping and check raising on the turn and river can produce some decent pots without getting you into too much trouble with the river rats! If you want a game that will make you pull your hair out, try playing down at the Hard Rock in Tampa, they have 1-2 limit tables with 10 players! Pure luck and nobody drops out till the turn. You really have to be catching cards to make any money in those games.

I can see your point 10,000 and I agree with you on some of it. I don’t know if the league is a joke but what they make the bars pays is a JOKE!!! The way the state tournament is set up is kind of a joke to. I don’t take it to serious, I go there just to have a good time and play cards.

I play a lot of different hands and play different styles. Windy, points about rising do work but you need to learn to play different. You can play the same way all the time if you want but when you start playing good players you won’t last long. I have played in a lot of tournament and cash games they are a lot more fun. Canterbury has some great tournaments as well, but watch out if you are playing just a cash game there.

I have been on tables with guys that are working as a team and it’s hard to win. I have had a few guys try to work me and I caught it right away. If you play cards a lot and know a lot about poker you will be able to tell that something is going on when you play at a table with a team on it. I pulled my chips off the table and ask to be moved, the dealer ask why and I told him because “him” and “him” are working together and I’m not playing at a table with a team on it. The dealer ask for a seat change and away I went!!! I made sure that both of them got a piece of my mind before I left!!! mad.gifmad.gif

The people I play with actually take it pretty seriously, and just a few drink. I agree with state, last one I went to- they wanted us to be in our seats at 1 I think it was, then they had a 45-60 minute spiel before they announced shuffle up and deal. Do all that before they have us all sit down, most of its [PoorWordUsage], but a few rules- which I can understand, but over a half hour of [PoorWordUsage] is nonsense.

Windy,

3-6 can be a good time and lucratice, I agree. My style is to wait for premium hands, raise them to 6, and if I hit the flop, I bet it if there is a flush or straight possiblility, if there isn't then I check (why bet 3, all it does is it shows strength with little return behind it). On the turn, I will check if I know that someone will bet then I raise to $12, I will usaully check raise the river or just best out of position. Also, I always bet 3 into a flush draw off the flop.

One thing about 3-6 is that I don't care how good you are, in the long run, the best you can do is break even on 3-6 tables.

I like spread games but the pots are alot smaller in a 2-10 game. It has alot more feel than a 3-6 which is always fun. 3-20 or 5-60 is my favorite. I think its better than no limit.

Speaking of 3/6 Hold 'Em, last state finals I was at, I got knocked out early and went up to the 3/6 tables. Cracked pocket aces twice- once with 44, and the other time with 78. When I had 44, flop was 235 and the card I wanted- an ace on the river. Of course the guy had trip aces, threw is his $6 on the river, I raised and he just called, coulda been alot worse for him. When I had 78 I flopped 2 pair and they stuck. I was having a great day upstairs, unfortunately for me the guys I was with got knocked out at the tournament and wanted to leave.
