theres alot of fishing shows out there, and watching them some of us may have thought, '' man, i wish i had his/her job''. my fishing hero and the person i most wish i could emmulate has to be Mr. Larry Dahlberg. i mean this guy goes everywhere fishing all these different rivers and getting all kinds of monster fish of different species. venezuela one week fishing peacocks, russia the next fishing 500 lb sturgeon, brazil the next catching 200 lb cats, the guys a God. \:D whod you like to be like?

He needs to learn to keep his shirt on though \:\) The one muskie video with Doug Johnson he has his shirt off most of the time. There's no need for that....lol

IWG.....

The guys at work have an acronym called IWG....Independant Wealthy Guy. That's who I aspire to be. The guy with a place on LOTW, Leech, Vermillion, or wherever.... A guy you've never heard of that fishes when he wants, and for the pure enjoyment of it, not filling a 10 minute segment on a show with a weeks worth of work behind it.

These guys you see in the magazines and on the shows bust their butts to make it look easy for us the viewing audience, far from it! Not just in the season, but year round with writing, seminars, shows/expos, etc. I really admire them all for their skills, what they know and do with a rod and reel, the family and personal sacrifices they make, but I'd rather watch than do.

I've got to know a quite a few people in the fishing industry; from guides to small business owners (lures/rods), guys in the press/film, product reps, resort managers, FM staff, and so on.....and I really gotta tip my hat to them and the people behind them.

Again, I want to be IWG. See why?

Big laughs!!! I just had to show the Mrs your reply! She's laughing too! We decided that even though its only March 21st, you get the funniest reply of the year award!

Good 'ole Charlie Daniels!!! I actually have met him and got a signed Dickies T-shirt from him at a Dickies promo event, in St Paul on University Ave of all places!

Here's to all the IWGs we want to be like!

Still laughing!!! Thanks!

My heros are the guys who can work a job in the fishing industry that lets them be on the water alot and earn a steady income.

Don't envy guides, they work way too hard. Most of them have other jobs and they're forced to spend all day on the boat with people they may not like. I get plenty of backlashes by myself, don't need to spend the day picking someone elses. If they're not trying to get fish for someone else, they're losing money.

Don't envy rod builders and bait makers, they're stuck building and crafting while I'm on the water, although they do some great work, to my benifit.

Don't envy lodge owners for the same reason, too much work.

People who can fish AND make a living at it are VERY RARE INDEED.

Show me and IWG that's a hardcore musky fisherman. Most of the are too busy making more money than they'll ever need to retire and fish everyday.

Only a select few are able to spend a bunch of time on the water and still make a living. I'm not rich, but I only work 4 days a week, I have Wed and Thurs off, and I'm usually on the lake after work. Unless I figure out how to be the next Al Linder, I think I've got it as good as I can get it.

It goes both ways fellas. As guides we do spend countless hours on the water and most guides love their jobs although we have our own sets of heros. Now I peronaly see the guy with the fourteen foot beat up boat, maybe it has a flasher maybe even a graph if he splurged. He wears a flannel shirt with no sponsors on it, his outboard barely runs, his rods are the latest in 1960's technology and he could really care less how well he does that particular day. Now that is the guy I admire.

For Heros as in super man with a cape hero I have to go with the guy that has the guts to load up a boat full of kids and hit the water.

it's really fun to read others' takes on who they admire as a fisherman. although IWG, and the just a fisherman, and the boat load of kids are admireable for many different reasons for each. i want to go back Larry Dahlberg and give another account of him. watching his show, he's fishing in brazil i think, he catches a Butterfly Peacock Bass, a subspecies of the peacock. the world record is about twelve pounds and he releases one that was in his words, ''easily in the mid-teens''. that really garnered my respect at that time and i watched his show whenever i can since. i just respect that. last night i watched for the second time how he fights a big jumping fish, one a wolf fish in brazil i believe, and the other a golden dorado, he says the dorado is the toughest freshwater fish he knows. seen them both before and by watching them i learned and confirmed some fish fighting techniques. probly would have lost a few i landed if i did'nt know what to do at boatside, or near boatside. also he's not a push every bait on the market guy. won't even watch most shows anymore because they are just long commercials, and promo's with rods in the boat and lines in the water. tireing. plus Larry's got this slow-mo camera thing going on that's awsome. anyway, any hero is a good hero as long as it's yours.

Was talking about the Tourney with a buddy who is an IU fan. My fishing hero is Kelvin Sampson. Loads of cash, doesn't have to worry about working anytime soon, no reason not to fish 24-7.

I'll give a shout out to Dahlberg though, saw one of his seminars way back in the day and he's definitely one of the good ones. Where can I get a Mr. Wiggly? \:\)

I agree with Jonny P, Seeing the older fellow out on the water without a care in the world.

I watch alot of fishing shows, but whenever I see Larry Dahlbergs show, I always sit down and watch the whole thing. Mostly around Minnesota, I have always fished, and continue to fish everything, but what gives me the most pleasure is chasing the biggest fish around....the muskies, 40 inch class pike, 10# class walleyes, 5# class bass, big carp, and of course, the Lake Sturgeon. But I see Larry chasing the big fish all over the world, and man, I think that would be hard to beat. That dude has been on some adventures, and is really paving the way for some of us. I fully intend to be on some of them myself before it's over!

For now, the plan is to build a full time guide business...Minnesota in the summer, Florida Keys in the winter. Lots of big stuff down there to chase for sure!

I couple of other guys I enjoy are Al Lindner, Roland Martin and Jimmy Houston. Have been watching those three ever since I was a little kid. They've been at it a long time, and just keep on a truckin....I admire that. I like Al for his multi species knowledge and for the way he shares his faith. Roland because he's such a B.S.er, because I used to be a bass fanatic before I got bit with the musky bug, and also because he fishes the Florida Keys alot. Jimmy because he's just plain goofy...always giggling, laughing, and just plain giddy to be fishing.

b1gf1sh1 - that CD reply was way too humorous! As I'm reading it I'm actually doing it to the tune. If you are in the metro, Larry D will be at Blue Ribbon Tackle in No St Paul along with the Gryz, Steve Scepaniak, and a few other folks for some sort of musky days/customer appreciation event on Sat April 12th.

Josh could'nt get a spot at the muskie expo and did this same thing last year. talked to a few bait makers and got a few tips. but Larry D... i gotta shake his hand at least for letting that Butterfly Peacock Bass go. that was great.
