#24 Crash ---- was it the hardest ever!!

Recommended Posts

Lawdog,

Was it harmon's car who hit the wall/entryway to cross the track and it was not closed properly? I remember seeing that crash...it was downright nasty.

Oh...how about Geoff Bodine's truck crash in the first race at Daytona? I could not believe he made it through that one...

Then, Jimmy Johnson's Busch Crash at Watkins glen. Had there not been styrofoam before the wall, I don't think he'd be here today. I can still see that car launching into the air across the grass and into the fence...stopped dead!!

Yes, it was much the same as Waltrip's in the same spot, his car was basically cut in half and then Johnny Sauter hit it and missed him sitting there totally exposed by maybe two feet. Absolutely insane. Then Harmon just stands up out of his seat onto the concrete and walks away. I'm sure its still on youtube, I know I've watched it there before.

If you click on the Waltrip you tube link that was posted above and then scroll down in the related videos on the right hand side of the screen it's listed there.

Its so hard to judge crashes. The drivers will tell you that the ones where there fliping 15 times and never stop moving arn't that bad from inside the cage. Its the ones where there doing 180 mph and they come to a dead stop that really mess you up. Kinda like the one that took out ole Dale. That was a bad crash. Everything comes to a complete stop but your brain slams into your skull.

Wow that Mike Harmon crash was wicked. Never saw that one, and it definatly goes in the top 5 wrecks for me. The car completely fell apart and he was completly exposed and was nearly missed by another car.

The funny thing is, when you hear people talk about these huge wrecks and the cars just coming to pieces, they think the car falling to pieces is a bad thing...there could be nothing better since the more the vehicle disintegrates, the more energy that is being taken away from them and the car (save getting hit by another car in the process). It's interesting to get into conversations about crashes... Many cannot even fathom that those cars are so much safer than the ones we drive day in and day out...

That is why Dale Sr.'s death happened for the most part..a dead-on hit and the only thing that moved him down the track was Kenny Schrader's car...nothing but a side windshield and the bends at the front of the car...the rest went directly to Dale...

And to think they used to use leather helmets, a simple lap belt, and no reinforcements in the car...

Buddy Baker talked about that in Daytona this year and mentioned his first time going over the old guard rails and down the other side. His dad didn't tell him about the pain he would feel. He basically said, "you'll get your chance to feel the pain"
