The Twins had a day game today so I had the day off, so Mitch and I headed up to Yellow but were only able to boat 3 today, keeping 2(20",18" and Mitch caught an 11". I also lost a good one right at the boat. We got up around 6 and stayed until 1 P.M. It was a nice day on the lake but not much biteing. Saw a couple people casting for muskies and they only had one follow for the day. We'll be back on the water early Friday morning as well so I'll post an update. Here's a pic of the 20" Eye.

I also stopped in Luck on the way home and picked up some of Mitchell's fish we had smoked from our Lake Michigan trip. Mitch boated a ton of fish and had a ball. Here's a couple.

We were at that Twins game Wednesday. It was over early enough that we were able to get up to the lake in time to fish for about an hour. Caught 3 short ones.

Thursday morning just one keeper, 17 1/2". Thursday evening one more keeper, 16 1/2".

This morning in the howling winds, 3 keepers. All 16 1/2 - 18 1/2" in just over an hour. Our best outing yet. Back out for about 1/2 hour this afternoon and bagged another 18 incher. With the howling winds we took tonight off.

Caught a 21 1/2 incher last week and did pretty good last Sunday morning before we had to go home. The last few years the bite has really picked up for us in July. It's looking so far like that's going to be the case again. All fish came on leeches, both on live bait rigs and under bobbers. We've caught them from 8' out to over 14 FOW.

Rob, you gonna be out in the morning? Look me up. Boat info listed several places in above posts.

Don,

Mitch and I were out this morning also but didn't do to well. Got out early, 4 A.M. but nothing doing. We caught 2 keepers. 15-1/2 and a 17-1/2 both on lindy's with leaches in 10 ft. I saw a couple guys in a boat catch a few small ones on the South side earlier in the morning but nothing legal.

I thought we did better last year in July as well also. Maybe they haven't turned on yet?

I'm not sure if I'll be up tommorow morning or not. If I do I'll be by myself in a black Smokercraft with a 115 merc.

The gail force winds forced my little 16 footer off the water early today. Kinda dissapointing after the good start to the weekend we had, but there's always next week I guess. We're going home today to attend tomorrows Twins game.

A buddy had a big crew up all week fishing muskie. Four boats, all week, they raised two fish. Two. They were not impressed.

The walleye fishing is going strong though. Caught a bunch this weekend, but not all that many keepers. We did keep 5 on Saturday from 15 - 18 inches. Two of us caught 15 this morning in probably only about 5 hours. Again most were short but one was right at 15 and another was 18 1/2. All were caught from 12 - 14 fow. All on leeches till we ran out, then we switched to crawlers (the first ones I've even put in the water in two weeks) untill they were gone. The 18+ incher came on a crawler. It was a great morning for us.

The location of these fish moved all weekend according to the wind. Even from late morning to early afternoon with the storms that blew through Saturday. Best tip I can give anyone is fish the shoreline that the wind is blowing into.

We also boated a couple nice bass, (18, 19 inchers) both large and smallmouth. Heard of others too who hooked some of these big bonus fish this week.

Interesting event last night. A friend was anchored out in front of our resort just before sunset. Saw something black in the water heading towards them. BEAR! It swam to about 20 yards from their pontoon before he figured it wasn't an island and turned back towards shore. Most everyone at the resort saw him, except me as I was fishing on the far side of the lake.

Ok hi everybody, I am new to this site, hopefully you can add to the information I just received, I have been going to Yellow lake for 37 years, I have alway done pretty well fishing for Muskies, this year with my work schedule I had to go up earlier so I fished from June 25th-July 7th I managed 2 small Muskies the biggest being 32 inches, and a decent amount Pike, but even that number was low, for many years I would at least get 1 40 inch plus muskies per trip, this year was bad, the 2 years before that was bad until the last day of each trip and both times i lost a mid 40's inch muskie.... so frustrated about the lake I contacted the dnr who gave me a number of a bioligist who has Yellow as one of his lakes, he mentioned 3 years ago in June they had a die off of Muskies on Yellow, during that time the WMT had a tounament there and that is when some fish were noticed as being sick, a 51 incher was half dead when netted, a few weeks later the bioligist said they found at least 20 40 inch muskies or bigger dead in 3-4 feet of water, they never found the reason for this and they never got a true number of muskies that died but the top end was hit hard.... that is a shame because it is a fun lake to catch big muskies.... sorry for the long message...good luck to the rest of you...

I have a camper down at Log Cabin Hollow (NE corner of lake) so I'm up there most weekends through September.

We eat at Ike's a lot. The north shore is one of my favorite spots.

Late July. Hot, sunny, dead calm, water temp 76 degrees. Not very good conditions for walleye fishing you say? Wrong!

Put 5 keepers in the boat yesterday morning in just a couple hours. They came on both crawlers and leeches, live bait rigging on a sharp break in 15 - 18 FOW. Two biggest were 18+ and nearly 20". All were caught using bright colored hot hooks and bright beads. Another great day on Yellow Lake!

DonBo, good job on the eyes! I've heard it's been pretty slow so far this year. I got some good sunnies though earlier. I'm going up this weekend to try it. What's the limit for eyes on Yellow now?

Thanks

Fishing was a little slower this weekend but still good. They seem to relate to the light. Last week when it was cloudy with a chop, we found them in 10-12 FOW. The week before with calm water and a bright blue sky they were down 16-18 FOW. The bite is pretty much 50 / 50 right now leeches and crawlers, but you better have both as the preferance changes during the day. Early to mid morning has been best for me. The limit is still 3 on Yellow, 2 on Little Yellow.

Sunnies are still biting on the deeper weed edges and they are still running on the bigger side.

Welcome to HSO, good luck and be sure to let us know how you do.

Real slow today. We kept a 16" and a 17" and caught one about 8" earlier. Caught quite a few incidental large gills and some perch on both leeches and crawlers. Quite a few people out but didn't see anyone else catch anything.

Anyone know when the bridge between little and big is being replaced? There's been rumors for years, but it never seems to happen. The lake association was looking at trying to get a grant. Last I heard, a local grovernment body (township or county) finally took it over and has it programmed for replacement sometime, don't know if it's true or not.

What a pain the existing bridge is, my boats can speak to that, ouch.

I heard the same rumors you have. MAYBE next year was the last I heard.

My boat fits under there just fine, so I have no real problem with the existing bridge...keeps the riff-raff out. grin

OMG, I have NEVER seen the lake so high! Our dock is almost under water, some of the docks at the Lodge ARE under water and end 4' from shore. WOW!

The fishing doesn't seem to be suffering much because of the high water. Although we were nearly skunked Sunday morning, we caught a bunch of walleyes Saturday evening. (only one keeper frown ) They all came from 10-12 FOW pretty much even between crawlers and leeches.

All the rain and runoff really cooled the water. Surface temp is down to 73. The sturgeon are getting into their jumping mode now too. Saw lots of 'em out of the water this weekend. Won't be long before that season starts.

Anyone else been out the last couple weeks?

I can't get under the dang bridge so I fished little yellow sunday afternoon. hot and quite a few people out swimming and motoring around, but managed a few sunnies, a couple decent perch, wife caught a big largemouth (not me, a fish). I'm really tired of that stinkin' bridge, but I'm too lazy to load and unload my boat. As much as I don't want to, I might have to use the launch if the water doesn't go down because I will definitely fish big yellow this fall.

Did the musky fishing ever pick up for anyone?

I haven't heard of anyone catchung a musky this year. The guys I know who are on the lake have been fishing elswhere for musky.

I agree with the fall fishing. I'm going to try to do more of it this year, just so busy with the deer and goose and pheasant and.... smile Gotta love the fall!

Thanks Don. Yeah that's too bad if the bigger muskies died out as was written about earlier in this thread. What a shame. The lake was starting to get some real nice ones. I know there's at least one left. I had one grab a crappy on my line earlier this summer, though it wasn't huge, probably around 20 lbs.
