Placement of heaters

Has anyone found a good place for the heaters in a flip over other than in front of the doors? I am always worry about the canvas getting too hot. Also when you exit the door, you have to watch so it doesn't hit the heater. I have the heater/cooker from mr heater. Anyone with some pics of good placements?

I've got the fish trap yukon and I always put my heater between the two holes I am fishing out of. I always try to set up so the holes are in about the middle of the open fishing space so that I do have room to put the heater and it won't be so close to the canvas. I also have the heater/cooker but I bought the 15 ft extension hose so the tank that i am using is sitting outside the shelter not taking up space. The only thing I do as a precausion is when I am exiting the shelter is make sure the door flap goes out. I have never had an issue with the canvas getting to hot as the outside air is usually pretty cold and it kind of off sets the heat from the heater. The poles in the house are the only thing I have noticed really gaining any heat from the heater but its not enough to make me worry. As far as I can see, in front of the house is about the only way to go.

I always put my heater in the corner of my Voyeuager. I use a sunflower on a 20lb tank. The tank sits in a milk crate for stability, and I aim the sunflower back towards the middle of the sled. I keep it on the side opposite of where the door zips. as long as I zip the door and push the flap out don't have a problem with it getting near the heater. Allows for plenty of room, and can easily walk in and out of the house. grin.gif

I have an otter II and do the same as Jigging-matt. I use a heater cooker. My sled is modified so the tank sits in the sled. Run the hose down the side of the shack into the corner opposite the door opening and let her blow to the middle. Never had an issue so far.

I had the same worry using a sunflower in my frabill and switched to a big buddy heater. it's basically all plastic in the back and i can set it right up against the tarp/fabric. I too run a gas line to the 20# tank sitting outside. With either heater, i put the heater on the opposite side of the "hinged" section of the door so whether it swung in or out it wouldn't hit the heater.

I have the huge otter sled and have the triple sunflower heater. keeps you warm on them cold windy days. tried the single once when it was cold and holes froze over and everything. so i thought go big or go home. place ment wise two holes in between two fishermans feet and one in far corners of house. and then heater in middle. only thing i noticed with the cooker sun flower heater is it makes a pond inside in no time.

Same deal here. I have a Mr. Heater/Cooker as well on a 20# that stays outside, I run the hose inside and set it in the same location in my Frabill Ranger XLTwin

I to put my heater on the opposite side of the door, but on my frabil ranger xlt I took some pvc pipe 1/2 three poles and some t"s on the the front two poles top to bottom of the door and one in the mid, the one in the mid will slide up or down to help the door area stay away from the sunflower, takes no time to put or down.

josterbauer,

The pictures below are of my Otter Den, I have a similar setup in my Otter Magnum. I usually fish with my kids (both houses) and I like to be very mobile. I mounted my heaters over the front of the sled where the floor is sloped (wasted space). The heater is stays there when fishing or moving, the sled cover fits over it. When I'm ready to fish I just turn on the gas and hit the igniter, nothing to move. The open top of the heater lets the heat out, therefore the heater itself does not get too hot. I have to shut it off about 1-2 minutes before I move to let it cool. My kids (7 and 10) fish in this house all the time. We've never had any burnt clothes, fingers, or lines.

My point is that it's very convenient to have the heater mounted in a location that works for fishing and transit. The whole idea of the flip-over is to be mobile. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Sandmannd,

That heater is homemade, my uncle used to make them, but he can't get the burners anymore. The heater in my other house is also a cast-iron burner, open flame heater. I'm not a fan of the sunflower or buddy heaters, too many problems. The old cast iron burners have a nice blue flame and I've never experienced a headache or burning eyes like I used to with a sunflower heater. There are propane convection heaters available that could be mounted similar to what I've done. Thanks
