I first saw these at a Gander Mountain in MN. It is basically a spot light that will float at the top of the hole and beam a light down. They are used for night fishing to attract species like Crappies to your bait. I have also seen neon glowing ones that drop down the hole.

Just curiouse if these are legal since I would consider this similiar to shining fish. Thanks

I don't know for sure but I would they they aren't. I've heard of folks years ago drilling a parshal hole and putting a lantern in there to light up the ice. I've heard that's no longer legal, I would think this falls in the same lines. Again, not real sure though.

I'd say totally illegal.

From p10 of the 2007 MN regs:

 Quote:
Using an artificial light to lure or attract fish, or to see fish when

spearing, is unlawful. Exception: While angling, a person may affix to

the end of a fishing line a lighted artificial bait with hooks attached.

Any battery that is used in lighted fishing lures cannot contain any

intentionally introduced mercury.

I have never heard of them, but if they are selling them at a place like Gander Mt. in MN they should be legal here. Did you try looking in the 2008 fishing regulations book?

Don't assume just because some place sells something that it is legal in that state, especially when you are at a national retailer. Most retailers are accommodating to all people not just the locals because all states have different regulations. i.e. Cabelas sells the remote controls for robo ducks but they aren't legal in Minnesota, they are however legal in North Dakota.

Here's another example - Gander sells Wisconsin Deer Hunting licenses. Definately not legal to use them in Minnesota \:\)

. . . except on the St Croix . . . unless of course you're a Minnesotan, then it's still not legal
