i went out fishing last night and before it got dark my flasher was working fine. But after the sun set i could not get the screen to clear up, it was solid with green to light red lines from 18' to 30'. i was the only one using a flasher. the only other time i have had this issue was last year in the same spot. does anybody have any similar experiances. any suggestions would be great

i've seen the exact same thing happen, it's the wierdist thing like someone fliped a switch. i dont have an explaination for it but id like to know what causes that to.

how was the charge on your battery? i know that this can happen on a low battery.

Most likely it is plankton (sp) rising from the bottom.

That's what I was thinking. Did you turn your gain down at all? You only want your gain high enough to just barely make out your bait.

I have never had the same thing happen just after sundown, but I have had similar issues when my battery charge got low.

I was just thinking battery too. The vex will freak out on a low battery. Good luck

I'm with Dusty on this one... I think its the little creatures... or it could have been fish as well...I have seen it happen a few times.. try turning your gain down a touch. Good news is, I think your unit is fine.

I have had that happen on a lake with freshwater shrimp.

Zoo Plankton. Very likely the fished started feeding on them as well. Often times the fishing is done when you see them come in. Yep typically just after dark on many panfish lakes. Nothing wrong with your Vex. Trust your electronics as you will definately learn from them.

i tried to adjust the gain but no matter what i did it didn't matter. i finally turned it off and fished with bobbers. caught majority of the fish with the vex packed up.

I'll go with zoo plankton as well. This same thing has happened to me many times in one spot that I fish, always just after sunset, and does seem to shut it down for an hour or two. It just happened Mon. eve. to both me and a friend fishing there, we couldn't adjust it out, it went away after a while.

On my camera I have seen schools of them, to the point where you couldnt see at all in the camera.

Another vote for Zoo Plankton. Two of the lakes that I fish quite regularly has this happen. Normally it is about a 1/2 hour- 1 hour after sunset. It is very annoying to try and make out your jig in the midst of all that junk, however, you can still see the red lines of fish in the mess. The hard thing is knowing where your jig is in the whole scheme of things.

The best advice I could give you is to switch to a bait that has a wide profile, so you can adjust your gain to the lowest setting possible.

Thanks for all the info. I didn't turn the flasher back on to see if it went away after awhile, so who knows. The fish did keep biting. Two of us got our limit of nice crappie.

definately plankton... those panfish just swim around with their mouths open and gorge on them at a water temp most efficient to digest. makes me wish i paid more attention in science class makes us all better anglers

jwj, what was the name of the lake iii'La check that issue out with the DNR and get back to ya on that water flea thing. Limit of crappies huu!
