Fisher Dave
I have the dumb question of the day .. not ice fishing specific, but fishing specific to the forums here, and this is the most active forum ... so here's the question I moved to Floodwood .. 40 Miles south of Hibbing, 40 Miles west of Duluth, 40 Miles east of Grand Rapids, and about 40 Miles as a rough guess to the McGregor/Aitkin area (without referring to a map) .. So What Forum would be the most specific to my area??

Steve Foss
Dave: That's perfect, you get to make friends and get info on all three boards! Living in Superior, Wis., I post on the Wisconsin and BWCA-Duluth-Ely Area boards. I've met cool guys from both sides of the bay. But realistically, once you scope out the area you can post questions/info inquiries on whichever board is closest to where you're planning to fish that time. You'll become known on all three boards before long. Enjoy. ------------------"I've driven farther before to catch fewer fish . . ."Steve Foss[email protected] [This message has been edited by stfcatfish (edited 02-12-2003).]

merc
Not a dumb question at all but the way I see it is why would anyone ever move to Floodwood??? Just kidding, it is a very nice area, my ex brother in law lives there. As the old saying states "go with your heart". Good luck fishing the area!!!! Fisher Dave
Why Floodwood?I guess thats a legitament question.I grew up trying to spend ever minute possible on the water and in the woods. There was nothing more exiteing than to go *up north* .. to get away from it all, just to enjoy the peace and solitude.Well ... back then *up north* was an entire different world before everyone decided to build tourist traps, 5 star resorts, golf courses everywhere you look ... all of a sudden, one day you realized that your no longer *up north* even though you had to drive a few hours to get there.Yesterday I had to drive to Hibbing which is 38 miles north of here. From the edge of town, I passed about a dozen houses, 10 million birch, pine, poplar, and tamarack tree's, saw 2 grouse, maybe a dozen oncoming cars, a couple lakes that didnt have villages on top of them .. in fact I only saw 2 ice houses... This is in 38 miles... I'm finally *up north* again.. and loving every minute of it.
ackotz
Good for you! I wish I could get that up north! Soon, I started in Southern California and now I'm in Minnesota. Give it a couple more years and I may end up in Hudson Bay...
Steve Foss
Fisher Dave: I hear you. We're pondering moving from Duluth/Superior to Ely. Well, I guess that's as metro as you can get and still be "up north," what with all the granola eaters that converge there during BWCAW summers. Nice and dead in the winter, though, and never far from real wilderness there.
Mr. Pike1
FisherDave, you are living the dream. My favorite memories of childhood were going to the cabin or up North.. I love everything outdoors. My fiance and I have a nice place in Maplewood with a sliver of a wooded area in our backyard. We get the occassional deer, and other wildlife but I long to get away from the city and wake up in the morning just wondering what lake to fish....I will probably be here another 20 years but then I plan to sell this properety and buy the house of my dream on some Northern body of water....I will miss the Calhoun reports but will look forward to new ones from you
Fisher Dave
I have all the info on Calhoun, and just about all the inner city lakes most people could probably ever need .. other than up to date reports for the future. I have been considering making my own book of the metro fisheries for years .. never know, it could still happen. Between my own input, I have a good connection with a very reputable lake map company, and other good sources on metro info including some people on this site. I have been logging info for years. As crazy as it sounds, I enjoy watching others catch fish in the metro waters more than myself in the recent past. I guess its time for me to tame some new lakes and rivers around here. upnorth
I agree with what stfcatfish posted. I frequent and post on any of the sites that I plan to fish. The closest for me is Vermilion and that is where I spend most of my time fishing. I also fish the North Shore, URL, LOW, Winnie, and plan to add Kab and Crane to the list this year. I don't have what you would call a home forum. If I am bored I browse all of them. There is useful info on all of the forums. Most of the people on here are really willing to share good upto date info, and there is some absolutely gut wrenching humor floating around here at times to. treeclimber
Fisher Dave:I was reading your post and when you said you were from Floodwood I had to chuckle. I just recently moved from Meadowland/just north of Floodwood, where I had lived for the past 16 years. What made me laugh was that you moved to that area to get back into the woods and I moved out of that area to get closer to civilization. Not that I don't love that area. It just got to be too lonely in the winter and always too far from friends and family. I still live out in the woods but much closer to people and things to do. If you ever need any info on any lakes in that are let me know. Also if you like to deer hunt especially bow hunting I will give up a few of my secret spots as I no longer will be hunting there. I know live in LIttle Falls and have 210 acres of my own to hunt on. So I won't be driving up that way any more. E-mail me if you need some help. [email protected]Good luck living in Floodwood. By the way the St Louis river north of Floodwood between the Hwy 29 and Hwy 133 bridge has some of the best walleye and catfish fshing you will find anywhere in Minnesota. I lived by the river and fished it alot. Get yourself a small boat or canoe. Drop it in on the 133 bridge and float it down to Hwy 29. A fun half day trip with lots of good fishing:Bob

bturck
Fisher Dave: Floodwood huh? We have a hunting camp oout on Laurie Road on the Savannah River. I would check the McGregor Forum for some of your information. There are some good lakes in that area. Also some good lakes down in the Cromwell and Moose Lake area, not sure which forum might cover them.Treeclimber: So Meadowlands, Tyvolia huh, now I know the rest of the story. Good luck guys and hang on. Bill
Fisher Dave
treeclimber ... you'll have mail.meadowlands ... coincidence .. I just had to drive there earlier today and saw a couple does roadside. Its a small world we live in. Meadowlands is definately a small world .. Floodwood seems like civilization compared to there. As for fishing the St. Louis .. I know where the access off 29 is .. looks steep and kinda funky (stopped there this morning on the way to Meadowlands.... Good thing I have a small boat and a 4x4 to put it in. Zdaddy76
Fisher Dave! Floodwood is a great little town. I've been going up there my whole life. I have 40 acres on the Balsam Rd just north of Piontek's Minnows and Munchies. It is the true north up there. Prairie lake is a challenge but there are some nice walley in there if you know where to go. The rocks off the little island is a sure bet with leeches in the spring. Otherwise the northerns can get rather big too. It's good to hear about Floodwood. I posted for ever on the Grand Rapids forum and no on would ever respond to my questions. So where do you live in Floodwood? Do you ever hit the Mainline? Also is the Savanah Portage open again? I know that the Reilly's sold it to some dink and he ran it out of business.Well talk to you later.Dave.
Duffman
Hey Dave....Floodwood-- "Catfishing capital of the world",does that sign still exist? How are you going to fish with all that silence going on? No DC10's taking off overhead, no constant parkway traffic, that silence will kill ya! Good luck with things, hope stuff works out for you up der.
Lowe
The sign's still there. Anyone who hasn't experienced Catfish Days in Floodwood is missing out on a heckuva party.Fisher Dave, I live in Brookston, only about 10-15 miles east of Floodwood. For local info I usually post on the BWCA-Duluth forum. I know the area pretty well if you have any questions.
Scott Steil
LOL, I used to hunt in Floodwood....12 years! We were North East of town, just off of Swan Lake Road. Whoa, that brings back some memories!
Zdaddy76
We should all post on the same local site, would you guys agree to post on the Duluth site? That would work for me!! Let me know how that works. I do a lot of Grousing up there. Man did that suck last year. Saw 1 grouse per day if that!!! I bow hunt the Balsam too. Does anyone know the Kjobergs? I know that family well.---Zdaddy
Duffman
Fisher Dave.....Yea, I suppose you will not get many "JogBra Alerts" up that way. It's still a few months away, but I can't wait to be fishing a city lake in my canoe, enjoying the *scenery*, rod in my hand.....oh nevermind. I'll keep in touch Dave, take it easy and enjoy your new home up nort. Don't forget to send me your secret logbook complete with marked up maps.....LOL
the big dipper
floodwood has a really nice quiet campground on the river. It would be a great first nite stay if you're heading further nort. Or you can stay for the weekend and experience a little small town life, and fish the river.
