Ice house LED lights?

Dumb question alert........ What is the reason for all the LED light discussion? Is there a fishing benifit? Lighting benifit? I have been only back to this sport for the past 2 years and am learning every day. Does it pay to have this type of lighting in my portable?

Thanks

Some people prefer electric lighting over a lantern. Pretty much just personal choice. Without the lantern it's one less thing getting in the way, burning holes in the canvas, and stinking up the place.

Myself, I like the lantern. However, I got a string of LED lights for Christmas so I'm gonna try them out.

What I have heard is L.E.D. lights take less power to use. Thus, having a longer run time than other style lighting. Also they are compact and some what hardy to the extreme conditions of ice fishing.

As far as use for improved or unimproved fishing out come, no one has said much about that yet.

And there's no broken mantles or globes with LED's, which I seemed to do every year and the reason for my conversion to LEDs. A lantern does give off some heat besides the lighting, but that's the only real reason to use lanterns vs LEDS. LED's really are the way to go.

I switched just this year to LED flex strips zip tied to the poles of my portable. I really like it. I was never comfortable hanging that Coleman gas lantern overhead in the portable so it sat on top of a bucket. I've got some new free space around my feet now. When it was time to go the lantern had to be turned off in time to cool down before packing it away in the sled.

From what I've read here others are getting 40+ hours of run time from a vex type battery powering the LED sets. Good Luck!

I decided to put LED lights in my portable because they seemed to be less of a hassle than using a lantern. I have a spare vex battery to power them and they do run a long time and put out a lot of light.

Have posted this picture before, but I have used them a few times now and absolutely love them. Lanterns are a pain, between how hot they get for about an hour after they are turned off, to replacing globes and mantles, not to mention endless propane bottles. This picture is of my 5600 with lights and camera flash off:

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
