Ice Well from Today's Tackle -modification?

After kicking myself for a year and not buying an ice well last year, I picked one up this year and used it for the first time saturday. Works great!

However, has anyone added weight to the bottom of the bag to help the bottom go down? I ended up trying to push it down with my "big dipper" and thought either tossing some weight inside the bag itself or maybe sewing some egg weights onto the bottom would make it easier to put down the hole?

Anyone try this yet?

A couple of stainless steel nuts and bolts from the bin and that baby sinks like a champ!!!

I sink mine with a 2# lead weight.

How far down do they hang? Can I drill a third hole in my two man flip over and not have to worry about a pike wrapping around it?

I would guess mine is approx 30 inches long. I always drill an extra hole for the Ice Well when I use it. Its a nice way to keep your fish alive and not frozen.

Do you ever have trouble with the Ice Well freezing to the ice?

I always have the heat on in the house so the holes dont freeze up, so no,no problem. On the way home I just throw the bag in a pail and they are not frozen rock hard when its time to clean the fish. I really like it. One can check them out in the Outdoor pro stor here on FM.

If you leave them in the hole for an extended time, say, while you are sleeping, they will freeze to the sides of the hole on really cold days. I lost two of them that way.

It's not a problem...just put it down far enough to submerge your fish..I also angle the hole most times..

Another tip I learned from Bruce Mosher, owner of Today's Tackle, is to break the stiching on one side of the foam opening of the ice well. Double stitch and re-inforce the stitching below the foam opening to keep it there, and you've made it even easier to get larger crappies and walleyes out of the ice well to clean.
