Fish Trap Scout Mods!!

All here is what I have done on my fish trap scout!!

1. I moved the seat to the middle therefore its holds my buddy heater and minnow bucket more tightly.

2. I use a small cooler that locks with handle that fits tightly with the seat and now never had a spill. Also, smaller and lighter with using that as a minnow bucket.

3. Battery for rope light.

4. Attached the Genz tackle box holder to the back of seat keeps boxes off floor and ready to grab. Also, able to put GPS, Camera, FRS radio, Extra line and others in quick grasp. Keeps stuff in it dry being off floor.

5. Add removable rubber bottom outdoor rug. Keeps things from sliding around.

6. Added beverage holder.

7. Drilled to small holes for pliers.

8. Added spring loaded broom holder for a rod holder.

9. Added a back rope by feet for easy pulling when hole hopping. Don't have to run over holes to setup quicker.

10. Added clam rope light over hole inside scout. That is a enough light and low enough it does hurt eyes.

11. Marked off ruler inside house vertical pole next to seat to give a quick ref. on length of fish. Then a quick release.

All in all nothing really added any weight and pulling over snow is very easy. Let me know what you think. Good and bad responses are welcome!!

he didnt ask what kind of house it was he said for what type of shack this is for.. there was no question mark therefore he was commenting that it is nice due to how lightweight the mods are...

I would like to do a few things to my scout as well... i am going to try to rig something up that holds the auger on the side of the sled just off the ground... dont know whether it will work or not... good idea with the rope on the front by the way... i may have toadopt that one!

Thanks for the ideas and keep them coming!

Nice Mods I may have to adopt a few of them. Thank You. Nice touch on the measurements on the pole. Simple, light and convenient. I would like the seat in the middle but I like to carry a normal size bucket and I don't think it would fit with the seat in the middle.

I bought a the same scout last year. Had to laugh when I saw your minnow bucket, ran downstairs to see if mine was still there with the minnows. I thought about the rope lights but am trying these LED puck lights I got at Fleetfarm for $6. I really like the floor mat Idea and the center pole ruler. I will be getting out the Sharpie tommorrow. Simple, but ergonomical! (pretty fancy term)

Nice additions. But does the battery for your lights slide around the bottom of your sled. That is really the only thing I noticed. I have an HT Iceman Express One-man Flip-over I thought about adding lights to. But I don't fish at night. Do I really need lights inside? I normally use a headlamp made by Energizer to see inside. I also bought one of those Black and Decker 14 LED Work lights on sale at Farm and Fleet. It has a hook to hang on my pole, but the light does not shine downward. It only shines out in one direction. I didn't put ruler marks on my poles, but I did add them to my dipper using some Automobile touch up paint I had lying around.

jbrid68,

Being that the minnow bucket is pretty tight not to move much the battery acctually stays there. It has been on the list of things do to get something hold it down but it actually stays nicely there so I haven't thought about it really. Besides it's normally on a trailer behind a snowmobile to the house sled itself doesn't bounce around to much.

joneshat, very nice! I am stealing a couple ideas for my Otter Cabin.

I have a ruler sticker on front edge of my sled, but the markers on pole is perfect. I'm going to do that! (funny, but we did that on our Alum. Tourney Pro boat right at the waterline, for measuring muskies so we don't have to take them out of the water to measure. People laugh when they see sharpie marks and upside down numbers on our boat smile.gif )

I also like the way you have your forceps hanging. Good idea!

I have LEDs lights and extra batt like you, and I put in a rocker switch to turn them on and off. Not sure if you have switch, but it works great, and real easy to add.

Thanks for sharing! Great ideas!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
