Tip up

I was watching a T.V. Winter ice fishing show and they were using a tip up that used a regular ice fishing ror and reel. The rod was in a holder with the tip bent and hooked on a small peg about 3 quarteres of the way up the arm, the line ran from the rod tip to the end of the arm, when a fish took the bait the arm lowered, the tip of the rod pulled off the peg and sprung up setting the hook. It looked like it worked great. Just wondered if any of you F.M. members saw this show or comercial on t.v.

I have seen the infomercial you're talking about, I believe those units are illegal in MN.

Yes, illegal. I can't recall why but do know that they are illegal.

I believe the law is that you can't use anything that sets the hook for you. This obviously includes spring loaded tip ups.

It sounds like you're describing an Arctic Warrior deadstick tipup. I own one and love it. I'd post a link but I think that's frowned upon here.

the one my little brother has is called the automatic fisherman. the rod is solid and the action of the rod sets the hook not a "spring device." not sure if it is illegal or not works slick though i guess i gotta tell him not to get caught using it.

No. A downrigger doesn't have any kind of hooking mechanism, it's trolling and using a weight to get the line down deeper (not using the weight to act as a mechanism to hook the fish).

Its deninitely not the arctic warrior. It doesn't spring back and set the hook. I've seen the product we're talking about too, I just can't think of the name.

It sounds like you are describing the Slammer Tip-Up. Another one that is uses the rods own flex to set the hook is The Automatic Ice Fisherman.

How is the rod considered a spring? There is a hook set Tip up that uses a spring to set the hook. But the fishing rod release the bent rod to set the hook. No spring. Legal??

I'd argue that it is legal. There are no springs in the slammer tipup. It is the energy built up in the bent rod that, when released, hooks the fish.
