single man shelter

I had the scout and it was a nice lil ice house, but too lil. I moved up to the Otter Cottage. It's a big one man and I love it. Yet light enough to pull around and lift it in the back up my pickup with all my gear in it.

The seats that it comes with are crappy, but you can put on a nice boat seat. I haven't, but my buddies did.

I've been using an Eskimo Quickflip 2 for the last few years and it works well for me. It will fish two guys okay and its light enough to tow and load/unload in my truck for one guy. I like to sprawl out when I fish and my gear has plenty of room, but it can be moved quickly when running and gunning. Hint...bring stakes and a rope when its windy to anchor it unless you've filed a flight plan. Experience speaking.crazy.gif

I was between a Recon and a Scout. Went with the Scout b/c the Recon didn't have a seat and just seemed cheap, also no door on the front so there is no way to get snow around the skirt if its windy. I really enjoy the Scout and the tent material seems very strong and is dark which helps with sight fishing.

+1! I have a cottage and love it. Largest single man out there I believe. I haul a ton of stuff in that thing and it fits it all. Nice and light for getting it in and out of the truck.

Lets see, what do I have in there. Gas auger, big buddy/11 lb tank, rod case, tackle box, extra (emergency) 1 lb propane, snacks, scoop, minow bucket.... the list keeps going. Last year at the Burntside bash, I had all of that, PLUS a folding portable and a second guys fishing gear 'n' heater. Oh yeah, and 2 trout wink.gif

Not the cheapest one man, but the extra space is very nice to have.

I have two eskimos, a quickflip III and a sport and like them both. But if I had to get a one man again I would go with the pro-fish 150. It has plenty of room and is lower priced then the big name shelters. All makers build good units so any one of them would be alright. They sell them at sportsmans warehouse. Good luck!!

I own a Fish Trap Pro by Dave Genz and I must say it is a very nice house. It has held up pretty well and the space it offers in a one man is nice. It is also very easy to pull and lift into the back of your vehicle. I would recomend one to you.

My dad owns a Eskimo Quickflip II and that is also a nice house. A little heavier but offers a lot of room.

I have a Scout, Pro and Guide Fish Trap. I really like the Scout best. It doesn't have poles to extend and fish's fast. I think Gander Mt is going to be having a sale on these starting tomorrow and going till Wednesday. I am going to pick up another one for the kids to use.

Good luck,

Second season with Recon. Very pleased. Slides in the back of my trunk w/seats folded down (small car). It serves the purpose of one-mans quick set-ups, easier pulling and hole hopping. I also like it cause you can the leave the auger in the sled and still flip it closed. Drawbacks include smaller fishing area compared to pro models in other brands and light canvas. If I had more cargo room I probably would have stepped up to the pro. With the Recon you can have 2 holes, a heater, camera and a locater on the ice but it's tight.

You may also want to consider the Shappell Rover 1.0. Its about the size of the FT Scout however I saw cabelas selling them for $150 last weekend. I think the scout is a little more sturdy for heavier anglers, however the rover has a nice little bench seat and is somewhat roomy.

The ulimate smaller 1-man is the Otter Den, but it is a bit bigger than the two I mentioned.

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
