Beginer Bow

Code-Man

Recommended Posts

I have a nice rifle and a nice muzzleloader and I think it's time to get into Archery. I'm still in my 20's and do have a bad shoulder. I'm also a big guy and I don't care about brands but I want something that will last and get the job done. I would like to get some recomendations if possible. I don't want to spend 1000 dollars on a bow because I don't have the money and don't want to invest that much into an entry level bow. If anyone has any recomendations that would be great. Also I am from the Red River Valley area and if anyone has a recomendation for a place to go that would be great. I'm living Detroit Lakes currently but am moving to Hawley shortly. So if anyone knows any place that would be great.

Thanks

any new bow today should be a quality bow. some have more bells and whistles than the next, but all pretty much do the same thing. my buddy bought a pse golden eagle cause it was cheap. for 300 bucks, that bow is pretty (Contact Us Please) nice. smooth, quiet, and as fast as the rest of them. and he has taken 5 deer with it, so it works. I myself have a bowtech and wouldn't trade it for any other. i know there is a sporting goods store over there by you somewhere, just can't remember if it is in DL or perham. pretty sure it is in DL. its a bait shop and everything else. good luck shopping. just make sure the bow fits you just right, cause if it aint comfortable, shooting it wont be easy

I personally would look for a good used bow. many top name bows will sell for less than half price after they are a couple of years old with nothing wrong with them. I would go to a good shop and get measured to see what draw lenght you will need and then start to look.

Ask plenty of questions here and you will get steered in the right direction. Dont get to caught up in the cetrtain brand name as there are many companies that make a top of the line bow.

I got into bow hunting 3 years ago and at the time bought a new Reflex Excursion (off shoot of Hoyt brand)...and am really pleased with the purchase. I'd say it is a middle of the line bow as far as price...maybe on the low end even. Bottom line...I'd say go into a good bow shop with a dollar amount you want to spend and try some different bows in that price range and see which one feels the best. Try new and used bows if they have them. Knowing what I know now...and shooting my buddie's high tech bows...(and being the bow hunting addict that I am)...I would now be willing to spend a little more money on a new bow IF I were to buy a new one....but like I said, my reflex has gotten the job done every time I asked it to...and I don't have money to splurge so I'll be using it for awhile. I think you'll find you'll enjoy archery...most people who get into the sport do. Good luck shopping.

just like everyone else said go get fitted for your draw length at a shop, talk to the pro but don't let him sell you on one bow. Alot of people are huge brand name followers and will try and sell you on that brand name. Another important factor when just beggining in bow hunting is the brace height of the bow. Your going to want to look for a bow with a largr brace hieght (as close to 7 as possible or even higher) as these bows are much more forgiving with an unsteady hand. Plus you said you had a bum shoulder so that may help as well. Most importantly you must shoot every bow your intersted in, its just like a car take the one that feels comfortable and fits you best. Any more questions just let me know, bow hunting is amazing ive been doing it for ten years now and nothing compares

I went to NDSU from 01' to 05' and i Had some of the best bow hunting on Public land around Hawley. First download google earth then go to the MN DNR HSOforum and Download the Google earth add on that shows all WMAs and you will see that there is more than enough public land within 20 minutes that you could hunt a different one everyday.

Good Luck

For a bow I like the New Fred Bears, because they are affordable and very dependable. Have had no problems with them. If you are looking to save money, look at hsolist because a lot of dealers put there bows on there.

Stop in and talk to Jeff at Backroads Archery... I see you're in Frazee. Most proshops will have a varied assortment of used bows on display. Shoot a few. You can get setup cheaper than you'd think. A buddy of mine shoots a PSE Nova and does fine. You dont' need a Drenalin or Guardian to kill deer. Also with your shoulder I wouldn't be hesitant to have the shop order some 50# limbs for you. You'll get a lot better performance out 50# limbs set at 50 than 60# limbs turned down to 50. 50 pounds is PLENTY of weight for whitetails. The minimum draw weight for MN being reduced to 30# should provide evidence. If your intent on buying new... I'd take a peak at the Diamond lineup. Quality at affordability. The Fred Bear line has a few gems as well. Have fun and let us know what you go with!
