Top 10 Catfish Destinations Worldwide

OK... I'll admit I peeked into the Bass Forum and saw a post with a similar topic, which really got me scratching my head.

The interesting twist is this list is worldwide, not just restricted to the US.

I've got a few places in mind off the top of my head.

1) Red River of the North (Selkirk, MA) for Channel Cats

2) James River (Virginia) for Blue Cats

3) Lakes Moultrie & Marion (Santee Cooper Reservoir) for both Flats & Blues

4) Amazon for whatever it is that swims there. smile.gif

5) Mekong (Thailand) for Mekong Cats

6) Somewhere in Spain for Wels Cats

7) ...

8) ...

9) ...

10)...

Still room left for a few more.

Another question I was thinking of was best river/reservoir in the US to catch huge flathead cats. Which body of water continuously produces the biggest of the big flatheads?

I've seen lots of HUGE flats & alligator Gar out of the Red River Tex.Oka.Border.Had a buddy in So.Cal went every summer and always made a bar bet he'd come back with a head that a bar maid could fit her head into its open mouth! He always won that bet!! grin.gif his largest 99 lbs.I only saw pic.But I did make it there a number of times I personally did'nt catch any huge cats over 70 is hugh to me.All the huge cats they got were jug fishin!! (no sport!) grin.gif

Lake Eufaula Oaklahoma on the canadian river is excellant also!

You would be surprised at the size of some of the fish caught in the Bayous in the south, the one I know pretty well is Bayou Meto just south of Humphrey, Arkansas. I used to fish there every day with my grandpa when I was just a lil tike. He always set out trot-lines, so it wasn't rod and reel obviously, but there were some bigguns in there. Big channels and flatheads, also wouldn't be a bad spot for noodling. shocked.gif

I think the list you have going is pretty good the way it is but you need to finish it up. The Mississippi down around Memphis is known to put up some big cats too. That is one you could add.

Probably have to throw Texoma in there as well.

I've read some pretty good stuff about the Eastern rivers as well (Delaware River).

I always hear about all these monsters "down south". While I agree the average weight is probably a good step up from the Northern fish, why is it that I never see a whole lot of pics or anything.

Is it just because the are kept and eaten and "not a big deal".

There is a catfish site that I visit from time to time and they have a large number of southern catfisherman. I just don't see the big numbers of large fish that one would expect to see.

In fact I participated in one of their national contests (very similar to KOTC) in which the Northern boys not only held their own but in some cases surpassed the Southern fish.

Just my thoughts for the day. Got way off track there sorry.

I was going to say Lake Texoma as well. Home to the former world record blue cat 'Splash'.

The Mississippi is great as well. The current world record blue cat was caught from the Mississippi near Alton, Ill. Thats very near the Miss/Missouri confluence.

I would sure think our area of the Miss (P2, P3, P4) would be ranked right up there with numbers of large flatheads. Hard to break that 50lb mark but there are a lot of those large 40 plus pound cats hanging around in the Miss.

Rock River is pretty darn famous flathead country as well.

I'll second that. This year was no different than last.

Though KOTC took precidence and much easier and cheaper to participate in.........this year even looking at the stats, our big fish would have taken some of the top spots.

IF you look in stats in many of the publications. The MN river produces some very fine Specimen's

I would have to say that it should be close to falling in the top 10 List. grin.gif

thanks

Also from what I read, I need to visit South Dakota

A trip like that could be arranged... Looking back, my childhood all the way through my college years could have been very catful.

There was a tidbit in last years In-Sider that really caught my attention.

Count me in.

The James?

Oahe

I've spend more time fishing on Oahe than any other body of water in my entire life (even with the lake I grew up on). It's by far my favorite body of water to fish. I doubt that will ever change. I've never targeted kitties out there, but would love to give it a try. Yep, it's big water thou.

I was at the Dakotamart in Pierre this summer and there were some pics of huge channels. The same guys were in all the pics. The clerk thought that they were caught below the (Contact Us Please) or the spillway in late spring.
