otis
Planning a trip to the big water late winter/early spring. Going after the greenbacks. Anyone done this? Any tips/advice? Any info is appreciated.
prov1900
We went to Cats on the Red this fall. My first time there. Stu McCay is a great guy with a great operation. First class IMO. Very affordable. Very interested in coming up in the winter and getting on the big lake. Greenbacks are so cool. The green color alone makes it worth the drive. Stu will put you on the fish!! March, from what I hear, is supposed to be awesome.
Scoot
Yep, talk to Stu. None better for great hospitality, knowledge of the area, and an absolute world class fishery.
otis
Has anyone actually fished there in March?
LeeMB
I live on the water near where your talking about. 50-60 fish days are common for me in March. Lots of fish over 28" too.
otis
Would you think mid-march or late march would be best? Can we bring our permanant fish house or are better off bringing atv's and staying as moble as possible? Thanks for the help!!
Canuck
Late March is the best. My sugguestions is to get intouch with Stu as I know he will be keeping up to date on the action on the Lake. We call it March Madness for a reason. The walleye are stagging at the mouth of the Red River. I would also sugguest U keep as mobile as possible. Sometimes the slush can be the pits but the fishing is out of this world. If U have the Garmin maps or able to see the Red River has actually several outlets and they produce. Actually the odd nice pike is also caught if U set up for them.
otis
He suggested Mid-March. Would be be ok if say we headed up the 16th-19th or so? Are there any maps of the stucture under the ice? Or do we have to "wing it"? I keep getting more and more excited everytime I hear someone talk about how great the fishing is.

LeeMB
was out on Sat. The ice is a mess. It froze and broke up then refroze. Very very rough. It will tough to travel on. Walleye and a few perch were biting. No need for a contour map. there is not a lot of structure. One thing I watch out for is dirty water from the red. Only fish the clean water. Jigging spoons are best. Sometimes the dead stick will do well as well. Move lots, then move some more.....
otis
LeeMB thanks for the great advice. Could you recomend a place to stay near where we would be doing most of our fishing? Thanks again!
LeeMB
Cats on the Red is your best bet. Stu will steer you in the right direction. If he is full there is a B&B that I have had freinds stay at called Bridgeview B&B that has parking for trailers and a fish cleaning room.
Catmendo
Stay tuned Otis. We are planning to get out in the coming days, not on Lake Winniepg though, we'll be focusing mainly on the Red for the first few weeks. March is the most productive time to experience Lake Winnipeg.Accommodations? Since I totally rely on sport fishing for my livelihood, clearly the advantage is "all" my guests benefit from accurate, up-to-date fishing reports. This you cannot get from staying at any local motels or B&B's in this region.Feel free to email me anytime for updates and or stay tuned on FM as I will be posting accurate updates as they happen. Scoot
Catmando-speeka-da-truth. He knows his stuff and is always willing to help his guests find fish. You'll definitely want to give him a call and set something up with him.
Catmendo
Just a quick update for Lake Winnipeg/Red River. Both are producing well at this time. The lake has been producing good numbers of walleye for those willing to put forth an effort. By that I simply mean, "the willingness to be mobile"! The pattern for success on this spectacular fishery calls for or demands a run & gun technique. If you're not finding fish, you can't catch them, it's that simple. However those willing to relocate in order to find fish, usually come away with solid results. Ironically the opposite applies to having success on the Red, at least in most circumstances. For countless years I have enjoyed huge success by playing the waiting game on the Red. I simply set up in a location that I have confidence with and wait them out. More times than not I come away with good results. The efforts we put forth yesterday proved fruitful, as I ended up icing two HAWG 'eyes over thirty inch's. Good-Luck to all during the remainder of this hard water season!

otis
Stu, how far away from the lake are you located? We were talking about trying to find the closest place to stay and hiring a guide for a bit while we are up there. Is that a good idea? Or are we better of staying at COTR? Thanks! Mad Mulcher
Otis,Calm down and take a deeeeep breath. The fact that you have all your own gear has nothing to do with whether or not you stay at COTR. You don't seem to be hearing the sage advice being given to you (at your request) by fellow FMers. To sum it up: No there is not a closer place to stay than COTR. The advice that Stu will give you on locations and tactics will help you catch more and bigger fish than if stay at the No Tell Motel. It's just that simple. We'll be expecting pics when you get back!Mad Mulcher
