I guess a it takes a dog to show gun safety. Place the gun on safe at all times - it only takes one dog

Don't assume he didn't have the safety on. My shotgun has the safety right next to the trigger. It would be easy for a dog to step on both at the same time. The real warning here is to control the direction your gun is pointing at all times.

it's been a while since hunter safety, but i believe the proper gun saftey practice when crossing a fence is to open the action on your gun ensuring that there is no shell chambered. kinda a pain in the butt, but better than a hole in the leg

I would agree that one should unloaded his gun and not just lay it on the ground loaded. he could have tripped himself and fired the gun. These type accidents can all be avoided if one would follow all the safety rules taught when younger or have just used a little more commen sense.
