GFNER
Been bowhunting for 27 years now and had a first this past Saturday night. I was returning to my truck in the dark when I spooked a large buck on the edge of a cornfield. He ran into the woods and stopped and I could hear him grunting I'm guessing about 30-40 yds.away. I was downwind so he was'nt quite sure what I was, thought I'd have a little fun so I gave him a series of 3 aggressive grunts. WOW!!! all hell breaks loose and he starts snort/wheezing like nothing I've ever heard before and charges straight at me gets 10yds in front of me before he stops, turns around and trots off. I'll tell ya the hairs on the back of my neck are standing straight,I almost pee my pants, and my legs don't stop shaking for 15 minutes! What a rush.It doesn't get any better than this. Wanderer
Not nearly as exciting but...Sunday morning I had an owl hit my head while I was on stand. No noise, just a serious "thump" on my head in the dark while my eyes were closed. No, I wasn't asleep and dreaming either. I had just moved my head a bit to check my watch. 6:15. 10 or 15 seconds later, thump! These are the coolest of experiences and a huge part of why we're out there! SnoManX
Same thing happened to me Saturday morning. I was walking to my stand about an hour before sunrise thru the alfalfa field and when I get close to where I have to enter the woods I could make out a deer. I stopped and kneeled down and figured if I gave a couple of grunts the deer would take off. Nope, he covered a 100 yrds in about 5 secs and just when I thought I might have to shoot him to get him to stop he pulled up at about 15 yds. Head lowered and pawed the ground twice. He was only a little 4 or 5 pointer but he was ready to brawl!! Found 5 fresh scrapes within 50 yds of my stand at daybreak, gonna have to cut out of work early a couple nights this week! 96trigger
I had a similar experience sunday night as I have stated in an earlier post. I was leaving the stand a little earlier than usual because I hadn't seen a deer all night. I get into the field and see a deer with his nose down running all over. I slowly work my way back into the woods. I grunt a few times. All of the sudden from my right, I hear grunting. Here comes another buck out into the field. I grunt a few more times. He comes in to about 30 yards and stops. At this time I'm thinking that this might not be the smartest move. He was a BIG deer and it was getting really dark. Finally, I saw him take off, but for a minute there, I thought I was going to have to do battle.
SnoManX
I guess I could have gone Davy Crockett on him. Any regs on stabbing a deer to death?! Just thought the arrow might have been the safest alternative (for me anyways), I've already been to the ER one too many times this year.
