It all depends. Seems like when we see small fish, that's all we see. But if we see decent or big fish, we see a few of them. That particular day I was out from 12:30-3:00pm and saw 14 fish. Four different times there was 2 fish in the hole at once. By far the best day in the spear house I've had for that short of time.

This was also when I saw a bigger pike come in wide open and hit a smaller pike and also had a fish around 20 pounds cruise in and chase off a smaller one, which I got on video. Very cool day.

Cool! I used to spear similar structure on a central MN lake - Putting my dark house on the edge of a sunkin island in about 8' of water next to a deeper 15-20' trough - It consistantly produced fish of all sizes.

Here are a few recent pictures.

The "Clear Water line up" - which actually didn't produce that day on the that spot. I love it when the coffee is still so hot you can't drink it yet...

Great place to see.. too bad there were no fish in this spot.

Next spot.. Same lake, but darker water. There is a small one sliding in out of the darkness from the left.

By the end of the day, Early Riser and myself had collected a small pile of fish. He had most of the action that day... like usual \:\/

This was just yesterday. I fished a small lake with slightly stained water. Usually this bright yellow decoy is not a great producer for me, but I think it matched the water well and seemed to be the ticket on this particular lake.

I moved once just to keep things interesting and to learn a little more about the lake. In the end I wrapped up with a 25", 27" and one 28".

Another great weekend. >

{No fish on spears please}

( Note from Admin. Please read forum policy before posting again, Thank-You.)

Water was a little cloudy this weekend. Set up Sunday in 5 FOW and the water was very clear, I'll be getting some video this week!

Right behind the eyes, dude! I've been on several lakes recently. With the lack of excavation going on this time of year, it's the game I play. New lake most days, my portable rarely gets unloaded in my garage. This weekend we fished a lake near Fergus Falls. Last weekend we were near Garfield. Heading south this week, and toward Battle lake next weekend. I do a lot of "homework" on where to go.

Here are some of my pics from today... The darkhouse became a redhouse today!!!! No I did not spear the bass in the pic with the Northerns, he took after a nice fathead on my ultralight rod with my Tica Cetus reel!!!! That was fun! The 2 biggest pike were 34" and 35" 9# 2oz and 9# 5oz and 2# 4# and 7 1/2 pounders

I guess the regs are somewhat confusing.

The way I read this is on inland waters you can't have more than 1 pike larger than 30" is that right?

 Quote:

SEASONS AND LIMITS Inland Waters

• All calendar dates are for 2007 unless noted otherwise.

• Daily and possession limits are the same unless otherwise noted.

• Most species have experimental or special regulations on some waters. See pages 23-43.

• For Lake Superior, Canada, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota border water regulations, see pages 18-21, 45-55.

NORTHERN PIKE May 12, 2007- 3 (Not more than 1 over 30" Feb. 24, 2008 may be taken each day.)

After a few times out, we finally managed to stick a pike...well actually a buddy did as we're both sharing the spear and taking turns throwing. I missed on so many fish it was ridiculous...

It was a good weekend though. Found a lake that actually has some clarity as we could see bottom in 12FOW without a problem, and the lake has high numbers of pike. Yesterday we sat out all day, and saw 5 fish, and today we sat out from 8am-11am and saw 7 fish. First fish hit the live decoy no more than 10 seconds after we put the decoys down the hole. Took a page out of Bass'n'Spears book, and did the tandem rig with the live decoy below a fake one. Couple of fish latched onto the live decoy, and we had to pull it back into the hole for a throw with the spear...it's so fun watching those things clamp onto the decoy, and move around under the ice...

Here are some picks...

My buddy with a 30" pike. Came in real slow on the bottom from behind us. Was a perfect straight down shot.

Spearing is a blast! Get the same rush as when deer hunting when a fish comes in the hole. Saw a lot of smaller pike. The one we speared was definitely the biggest at 30" on the button.

Boiled some up and dipped in butter...finger licken good.

Nice pics. Unfortunately not so many of us have cameras that we can set up (or know how to set up) to include both persons in the pictures. I've been called on this subject so many times that I plain quit taking pictures of individuals with more than their (my) personal limit. Statewide limit includes only one pike over 30 inches, with many lakes regulated for release of all pike from 24 - 36 inches with one oover 36 inches in the limit. It pays to read the regs for each lake you plan on fishing.

There were lakes in the past that included limits of up to 6 northerns, scanning the regulations now I do not note that.

Ya, in the state of mn, you can only take one norther over 30, and have three for the day.

Nice fish Marc.

How are you guys taking pictures of the fish in the water. Everytime that i take 10-15 pic, none of them turn out becuase of the flash. And when i turn the flash off, they dont come out ither.

Maybe im just dumb.

Merkman we had our wheel house out there on the lake about 100 feet from my darkhouse and 5 other people were fishing with us... we had a great time on the lake today watching football and having smoked venison/pork sausage for dinner. FYI my son was spearing in the darkhouse with me so it is legal for us to have 2 fish over 30"... Thank you

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
