Morson Outdoor Report

Blast and cast report.

What an incredible weekend.

On Friday hunted in a lightning storm and shot limit of mallards and a goose. Done by 9 a.m. Tons of geese in the area. My calling seems to alternate between goose magnet and goose repulser.

On Saturday it was bright sun and shot four ducks and two geese by 9, too warm and sunny to wait it out, so went fishing.

Five of us -- three guys and two little kids -- tried crappies at one famous spot but couldn't get them to bite so we swtiched to walleyes. Unbelievable. We caught at least 40, maybe 50 walleyes in 90 minutes. All between 14-19 inches. Jigs and minnows worked best but I used a jig and Slurpie bait and did nearly as well. About 14 feet of water in a current area, although it was nearly flat calm and at mid-day and 74 degrees. It was nearly a fish on every cast for about 45 minutes.

The fall colors are really explodiing up there and it was a great day for a boat ride. The full live wells made it even better!!

Saturday night at sunset I scouted and found a ton of mallards leaving a big rice bay that no one hunts. Set up there on Sunday morning and they came back by the gillion. Two of us had one robo duck out (the wind in our face!) to make sure they came near us but no other decoys. Didn't even need to call much. They were landing all around us while I was working the dog! Sometimes there were hundreds of mallards in the air above us, at all altitudes, all with wings set trying to figure out how to land.

We had our 12 mallards in less than 20 minutes, but we could have shot five times that many in half the time. It was fun just to watch.

Other duck camps are doing well on a mixed bag of mallards, wigeon, gadwalls, pintails and plenty of redheads. Bluebills already showing up. Geese shot every day.

Now I have to endure 10 days before I can go back up!

Any other Morson reports out there? I heard a little other shooting but not much.

We had similar luck. Three limits of crappies, three limits of walleyes (good size fish) and my son and I shot 35 ducks (mixed bag, jump shooting out of a canoe, didn't do well with decoys). Back in two weeks.

Well, it's no secret that Miles Bay, Obabikan Lake and Hay Island are the most likely spots. After that, it's moving around and finding them.

Anyone seeing any decent size crappies? The ones I saw caught at Hay last week were tiny...

A buddy of mine was up in Miles bay that same day you were out with the old man. He said most were like 11-12 inch range and it didnt take long to get his limit once he found them. I am going to bring my fishing gear when I head up thursday. Hopefully get out and try for some slabs and musky.

p.s Hemlock did you get my email? I stopped at your store one day a couple weeks ago. must've missed ya cuz you werent around.

GREAT report! I haven't been duck hunting in Morson for at least 12 years. Anyway, we quit because of the new gun laws. How much is it to bring my 12 gauge back up there? I've heard it's like $60 and you can have it up there for 3 months or something? That right? Is there a HSOforum explaining all of this?

On another note, I'll be heading up to the cabin Oct. 20th to hit the fall muskie bite and I can't wait!!!

Thanks in advance for any help on the 20 questions.

Permit cost $25 and is good for 60 days. Here is link to the HSOforum:

An alternative to this, like others have suggested here is getting a PAL license. This is good for 5 years. You basically have to take the Canadian version of gun safety training.

I took a PALS course a few years ago at a "catalog retailer" in Owatanna, MN. It's a two hour written and practical course covering gun safety. I'd imagine other retailers hold courses too. When completed, you get a photo ID card.

Shorelunch, Do you remember what the cost of the course was and in your opinion is it easier crossing the border once you have the PAL vis a vis the 909 form?

I just renewed my PAL, they waived the 50$ fee so that was kinda nice. My picture on my card is about rubbed off from pulling it out of my billfold when I show Customs. Sometimes they dont even look at my card and the cards for my guns just as long they are registered. Its actually easier for U.S persons to bring guns into Canada than it is for Canadians to bring guns into the U.S.

I want to say it was around $90, good for five years. The course wasn't difficult and was a good refresher. I think anytime you can eliminate forms and hand them a card is better.

B-dude, what the he77 are you doing up at 2:47 a.m. surfing the Web? Shouldn't you be reacquainting yourself with your wife after another long haul in that big 18-wheeler?!!!!!!

see you soon...

Excellent. I think I'll hold off for this years hunt but am definitely going to look into that 5 year card idea. God willing I'll be up there for 5 more years and I don't think the cabin's going anywhere so I might as well save the cash and get that card.

Thanks for the link to the HSOforum and all the info from everyone!

Another great duck hunt. Didn't fish.

Hunted Thursday night to sunday morning. Lots of birds, lots of thunderstorms. A good time was had by all.

Benelli Dude had the pleasure of hunting with me and my neighbor friend. We shot a few mallards (a few nice greenheads with curls but most still dusky) killed the ringies one afternoon and had a good b.s. session, shot a few geese (I call 'em, B-dude shoots 'em) and had a good time.

Don't anyone ask B-dude how big the buck was he shot Saturday evening cause it wasn't a buck.

Home for 9 agonizing days then back up for the best 10 days of the year!!

Yep Wildthing is correct. Great hunt! and the company wasn't bad either. I think it was more like Wildthing had the pleasure of hunting with me. It was cool to watch Wildthing's dog. Made some awesome retrieves especially when he plunged out of sight for a second to get that ringie. Definitely a weekend well spent. Yeah I may not have shot a buck but sure can't beat fresh tenderloins. Then a big turkey dinner prepared by sisters mom really topped it off. Most likely spend a few days up there at the end of the month to hunt with my dad. Whether it be deer or ducks....bring it on! Happy hunting! B-dude

Wild Thing/B-dude what general area do you hunt? I don't want your specific spots just maybe a general area to start checking out. We have been hunting the well known spots close to Morson and have not had too good of shoots. Thankfully, the fish have been biting. Heading up this weekend again to try hopefully the cold weather will send some migrators down.

Thanks, dnoz
